This is my first attempt at writing a short story. Please feel free to comment.
I'd be interested on the comments.

Gracie woke up saturday morning very excited. It has been snowing since Friday afternoon. Gracie couldn't wait to get out in the snow and play. As she gave a final stretch before getting out of bed, her faithful companion Chester was lying across her legs and wouldn't budge. Chester was a jet black newfoundland dog who weighed close to 100 pounds. He looked at her as if saying "can't we sleep a little longer". Gracie said get up chester so we can go outside and play in the snow. With the mention of outside and play, chester got up right away.
Chester has been with Gracie and her family since he was 6 weeks old. For those of you who are not familair with "Newfs" as they are sometimes called, they are bearlike in apperance. They are very good with children and love the water. Chester is Gracie's faithful companion and watches out for her. He is 10 years old and doesn't move like he used to, but is always willing to be there for Gracie. Chester was Gracie's savior and today it would be no different. What Gracie didn't know was that today would be the last day Chester would be there for her.
Gracie and her family lived on a ranch in Wyoming. Their house was situated on 5 acres. From their wrap around porch you can see the mountains all around you. Gracie's parents love to sit on the porch and watch the sunset over the mouintains. In the back of the house is a lake where Gracie and Chester love to swim in, in the summertime and in the winter Gracie loves to ice skate on it. Chester doesn't like to go out on the ice, so he just watches from the shoreline. In the past, Chester would venture out onto the ice but he would start slipping and sliding. He once did a belly flop and couldn't get up, so Gracie had to push him to shore. Gracie thought this was funny but Chester wanted no more of it.
After eating breakfast, Gracie told her parents she was going to the lake to skate. Her mother told her to dress warm and be back by lunch time. Gracie said OK and out she went with Chester by her side.
The lake was a beautiful sight in the wintertime, so smooth and shiny. When Chester and Gracie got to the lake, Gracie sat down on a rock and put her skates on. Chester found a large pine tree to ly down under. Gracie stepped onto the ice and started to skate. She started out slowly and then picked up momentum. She felt like she was gliding on air. Everytime she passed Chester, she would call out his name and he would bark and thump his mighty tail in the snow. Gracie skated for about an hour. She would do figure eights, twirl and do little jumps.
It was getting close to lunch time so Gracie decided to skate one more time around the lake. As she skated closer to the middle of the lake, she suddenly realized that the ice wasn't as solid as the other parts were. The ice started to crack under her weight and she started yelling for Chester. Chester's ears perked up as Gracie was calling out his name. He started barking but did not move. It wasn't until gracie's screams got more frantic that Chester got up to see what was wrong.
Gracie was trying to inch her way slowly to the shore when the ice finally gave way. Gracie fell into the freezing water and started screaming for help. The weight of her clothing was dragging her down and she was fighting to stay afloat. Chester realized that his Gracie needed help and he got up and started making his way towards her. It seemed to take forever for Chester to reach Gracie. By this time Gracie was getting real tired trying to stay afloat and she was beginning to go in and out of consciousness. Chester got to her just in time before Gracie went under again. With his powerful jaws, Chester got a hold of Gracie's hood and slowly pulled her out of the water onto the ice. They were still in danger but chester moved slowly but quickly to get her to the shore. By this time, Gracie's parents went out back to see what the commotion was all about. When they realized what was happening, her father rushed out onto the ice to get them both. Gracie's mom ran into the house to call an ambulance. When they all got to shore, Gracie was shiverring really bad and Chester collapsed on the ground. Gracie watched in horror as Chester fell to the ground. She was screaming for Chester as she was wisked away by ambulance. Gracie's mother was trying to reassure her that Chester was ok but it wouldn't be ok. Gracie's father took Chester to the emergency clinic and told the vet what happened. Chester was given fluids and was put under 24 hour observation. The incident took a mighty toll on Chester's old body and the vet said it didn't look good.
At the hospital, Gracie kept asking for Chester. Her parent's told her what was going on and she just cried. She cried for all the times that Chester was there for her and she felt it was her fault that Chester might die.
Gracie had to spend the night in the hospital. When she arrived home the next day, the family received a call from the vet. Chester passed away during the night. Gracie felt she had to go to the vet to say good-bye to Chester. It was a heart wrenching sight. Gracie was sobbing over Chester's body and telling him how sorry she was. Her parent's tried explaining to her that Chester loved her very much and that he died trying to save her. Gracie wanted to bury Chester in their backyard by the lake. The one place that he loved so much.
Chester was buried under a pine tree that faces the lake. He was buried with his favorite toy and blanket. Gracie visits his grave often and talks to him. I will always love you Chester, you were my best friend and with that Gracie walks back to the house all alone.
