so, have any of you read All Souls: A Family Story from Southie by Michael Patrick MacDonald?

i'm reading it for soc. and got really into it yesterday after shopping for classes. then i had to break off to do coffee with a friend - trust me, at this point i wanted to keep reading, anyway. when i got to work (this summer's job) 10 minutes before closing time, a cashier said she loved it and cried and cried, and a customer said he couldn't finish it - that's his family's history. he also said he couldn't finish watching mystic river when it came out. i guess it dealt with the projects in boston as well.

i was shocked! two people minutes before closing who'd read this book for fun - anyone else read it? what did you think?

i'm loving it. it's extremely beautiful, and raw, and life.

i read the other recommended book just for fun: a really great story about a guy from DC's inner city who goes to brown. It's amazing - he had straight A's but was only as prepared as other students with general level high school courses, and (i googled for further info) went on to get two masters, one from harvard, one from michigan.

he was buoyed up by his mother, his faith, his pride, and his teachers. very inspiring.

oops, the title would help: A Hope in the Unseen, by Ron Suskind
