View Full Version : Avocados
Hey guys! Classes are back in, so I'm working less, and have more access to an online computer. Hopefully I won't procrastinate too much (I'm determined to make this visit short because I have a presentation next week on Sutton Hoo) but you'll probably be seeing more of me. Sorry. ;)
I've got a ton of avocados, thanks to Hurricane Charlie, (if anyone wants to hear my story I can tell it later when I have more time) anyway, the rest of them will probably finish ripening today or tomorrow and I've already made 2 batches of avocado soup and 1 of Guacamole soup, and I've still got enough for 3 more batches of each! (all this even after I gave away more than half of them.)
Does anyone have any other recipes that will keep them for a long time in the freezer or something? I might get tired of avocodo soup pretty quick. But I've got to have it very soon before they go bad. (At least I didn't buy them)
Thanks everyone! :D

Hi Shea, how have you been..
well I dont know you can make a soup from avocado...:D sounds wacky :) (j/k)..
i have a recipe...get a ripe avocado smash it with some ice in the blender, put it in the galss..then add some sweetened milk, some chocolate crumbs and a cherry..we called it avocado juice in here :)
i think it would stay bit long if u keep it in the fridge..
and you know you can use avocado for hair bath, it really good to mosturize the hair..smash it and put it in your hair, massage gently for 10 minutes and leave it on for more or less 30 minutes..do it every week and you'll get shiny healty hair in a traditional way..
Ooohh thanks Sub! I'll give that a try. My husband really likes the soup but I've prefered just the straight avocado flesh so far. I just can't eat that many at once! :sick: I'll probably give your hair treatment a try too. Don't you hate it when you try a new brand of conditioner and it's worse than the one you had before, so now your stuck with a whole bottle of it? :mad: Sorry, I did just that yesterday, so you struck a new nerve. Hope this fixes it. Thanks!

welcome back shea...long time no see!!
oh to have an abundance of avocados...here we pay about a dollar and a half EACH....
well when im feeling wealthy and buy some, on of my favorite things to do with them is to slice it in half, take out the pit and fill the holes with a chopped shrimp (and/or crab), green onion and mayo mix. salt pepper and a spoon. yummmmy!
also a green goddess type dressing:
1 avocado, peeled and pitted
1 cup mayonnaise
5 anchovy filets, rinsed and chopped
2 tablespoons chopped green onion
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 clove garlic, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
thow it all in a blender and whirl it around till its smooth. chill for at least 24 hours..
tada!!
this is going to sound nuts but really..try it first, then laugh if you must:
avocado bread (be warned: it is GREEN)
* 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 3/4 teaspoon salt
* 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 3/4 teaspoon ground allspice
* 1/2 cup butter, softened
* 1 7/8 cups white sugar
* 3 eggs
* 1 1/2 cups mashed ripe avocado
* 3/4 cup buttermilk
* 3/4 cup chopped pecans
* 1/2 cup raisins
* 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9x5 inch loaf pans. Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and allspice. Set aside.
2. In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the mashed avocado. Stir in the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk until just mixed. Fold in the chopped pecans, raisins and orange zest. Divide the batter evenly between the two loaf pans.
3. Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Allow loaves to cool in pan for at least 20 minutes before removing.
good luck, and of course, carefully packaged avocado's travel far and wide quite well....pm for the address!!
Hey thanks Badmom! I think I'll try that bread tonight, it really sounds rather interesting! I would love to have sent you some avocados, but I'm afraid that they would be much too ripe by the time they get to you. They seem to go bad really fast (I've already had to throw three of them away.) But never fear, if the standing branches of their trees still have some of the fruit on them, I'd be more than happy to ship it to you! If not, you'll have to wait a bit, but my husband has been wanting to plant an avocado tree in our backyard anyway. I have no idea when it will start to bear fruit.
Thanks for the recipies!

oh....im waiting breathlessly to see if there is anymore.....
i would LOVE to have a bunch of avocados to play with...i have a plant growing in my house from an old pit, but sadly it will never bear fruit. we just dont have the climate here.....
Badmom!! Your bread was fantastic! The first loaf is already gone, I barely got a whole slice to myself. I think what does it is the sugar. If I put enough sugar in anything, I can't count on my husband letting it sit for long.
Once my project is over with (probably next week) I'll see if I can get some more avocados to send to you.

im so glad to hear you enjoyed it and have found a new use for your abundance of fruit. i really think its just a pipe dream for me to think i could get any of your leftovers. the customs and border control folks are pretty funny about any produce coming through, arent they? it would, methinks, be easier to ship mairjuana. oh well...*sigh* it is a nice dream
and you know you can use avocado for hair bath, it really good to mosturize the hair..smash it and put it in your hair, massage gently for 10 minutes and leave it on for more or less 30 minutes..do it every week and you'll get shiny healty hair in a traditional way..
Wow, sounds great!!! Shame that avocados are extremely rare (I barely know how they look and I might have tasted them sometimes but I really dont remember) and very expensive here :( My hair will have to do with shampoo...

Hello Shea! Glad to see you back.
I think I have a recipy for avacado ice cream at home - if I have IŽll send it to you.
Ohh, that sounds delish! It might miss this bunch of avocados, but I'd still love to have it. Thanks!
I feel kind of bad, I didn't realize how spoiled I've been with tropical fruit. We're planning on planting an orange tree in our backyard as well. If we're all still around here, I'd like to send out a bunch to you guys. It'll be a few years probably, but I'll keep you posted!

wow...oranges on a tree *makes disbelieving face*
i grew up in the okanagan where i thought everything grew. its where sun rype is (if you've never heard of it, its a HUGE fruit juice producer).
i had apples and peaches and pears and cherries and um....what else.....
tons of stuff, but nothing citrus-y
then i moved away from there and was stunned by the change in price AND quality of the produce where i am. and frig it...i cant even grow my own veggies here for the most part without a greenhouse.

Shea you could use it as a sauce over a white fish, halibut, cod, tilapia and use it as an appetizer as well for Guacamole or on sandwiches, cream cheese, avacado and turkey on a bagel is good.
hehe I didn't know avacado bread was possible, fortunate that it is so good otherwise nobody would be able to tell it had gone bad due to it's green hue.
