When Winston is arrested and is in "jail" then goes to room 101, they beat on him. The whip him, bite, kick, punch, pull and shock him. In this horrible condition Winston has lost weight, is pale, has red scars all over his body, is dirty, loosing hair, and has open wounds. Then all of a sudden he is getting more meals (3 times a day), being able to wash and with hot water, they aren't beating on him anymore, and treat him as an equal. Why do they let him get to the point of almost dying, then bring him back up and treat him like nothing happened?

Now he knows how is to be near death and he doesn't want go there again.
They treat him like friend and your friend could convince you in something rather before then your enemy. Without any strength in your body your mind can't function normally and they needed his mind so they gave him food.
Maybe they treat him like he is one of them but Winston knows it's not like that and that is enough for O'Brien.
