I think the rules are simple, you just have to ask a solvable riddle. So, you couldn't ask, "What's the maiden name of Virgil's grandmother?" But as long as its solvable, that's okay. You can get them from anywhere, just try not to repeat the same one too many times. :)
Okay, here's my riddle.
Bury deep,
Pile on stones,
My mind will always
Dig up them bones
Ooh, there's already a riddle thread herehttp://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13857&highlight=riddle
So either they'll merge it, which is likely, or they won't, because mine's slightly different- you answer and then put a new riddle on the same post.

The shot was fired,
The missile speed.
No one heard the shot,
But Grimes is dead.
There was no doubt,
Right through the heart.
No time to shout,
Silence is an art.
Go. Grimes, and this scene is from a famous book.

Either a silenced gun or a bow-and arrow, perhaps. By the way you were wrong, too; it's memory! ;)
What has fifty heads and fifty tails?

What has fifty heads and fifty tails? My memory is slightly more organized, I guess, Nik. The Bow would be right, this scene with Grimes is from Robert Louis Stevenson's The Black Arrow.
50 Coins.
OK. You are familiar with the East Cost of the USA? A Train leaves Boston at 6:00 doing 65mph. At the same time a train leaves Philadelphia doing 45mph. At what time can we expect them to arrive in NYC's Central Station? You may use a map, and a distance calculator.

That's not a riddle it's a math problem!
Here's one written by Jane Austen:
When my first is a task to a young girl of spirit,
And my second confines her to finish the piece,
How hard is her fate! but how great is her merit
If by taking my whole she effects her release!
(HINT: "my first" and "my second" are refering to the first and second syllables of the answer, respectively.)

That's not a riddle it's a math problem! The answer is NEVER. You have no reason to expect them there. It's a riddle because any logical person would notice I never said they were headed to New York or in any particular direction. I only told you what city and when they left going how fast. Then out of the blue I pull a location out of my hat and say when will they arrive there. This is a lesson in paying attention to details. What is not said is often as important as what is. Since I start with two trains headed out and end with a location, your brain is fooled into believing I somehow connected the two along the way. I didn't. I didn't even say the trains were going the same direction. And so, by misdirection, the magician fools the audience and wins the riddle. Logic, Nic, logic,

recite?
recite?
No, try again. Unless you have no more guesses. Think Socrates. ;)

It's a difficult riddle. I'm still trying to solve it- legally.
ah, quite simple- artful! :) lovely
my turn
I'll do two. (You can do two) :)
What goes through the door without pinching itself?
What sits on the stove without burning itself?
What sits on the table and is not ashamed?
Who makes it, has no need of it.
Who buys it, has no use for it.
Who uses it, can neither see nor feel it.
If you want the actual answer to my riddle, search riddle on wikipedia and you'll find it. :p

It isn't artful?
ah
Nope, not artful. Let's take a closer look:
When my first is a task to a young girl of spirit,
This is referring to a task. Hem fits just fine here.
And my second confines her to finish the piece,
What confines people? Locks!
How hard is her fate! but how great is her merit
If by taking my whole she effects her release!
By taking Hemlock, she is "effecting her release." (In other words death).

Yeah I got it when I read it on the page. (sorry, I said "ah" but it wasn't clear I guess.)
can you get either of the two I put up?
the first one I still know but the second I forgot, lol.
oooh yeah, okay; well, the second line of the second riddle could be misleading. You could buy it and have a use for it but usually not.
I'm not sure. For the first one: nothing?

Nope. Shall I tell or keep guessing?
I think we should give others a chance. ;)

Eh, why? There are lots of riddles. Also the two riddles are already buried.
The answer to the first one is sunlight, the second is a coffin.
Anyone's turn, just post a riddle.
I was going to guess light, but I figured the door might not have a window.
Here's another one:
Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Touthless bites,
Mouthless mutters.
Revived.
The answer is wind. Anyone can post a riddle if they want the thread to stay alive.
