What's the best advice your father ever gave you,
about life and living in general ?

it tastes better when you share
You better run before I belt you. (He and many other parents of my culture still resolve to sadism in educating children.)

Friday, May 25, 1956: "Your mother is taking me to the hospital today. You kids be good, and help your mother. Everything is going to be o.k."
Sunday, May 27, 1956: My father died. I was 11; my brothers were 15 and 8.
You know what? Everything did turn out o.k. - eventually.

"be strong... get up everytime you fall... even if you think you can't..."
this really hit me hard when i was about six or seven... i fell down from my bycicle, expecting my dad to help me out... he just stood there and told me to be strong... i could hardly walk... but i was glad i managed to get up and pick up my bike...

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the same advantages that you've had."

simon, thanks for asking... my country is in deep **** right now... (i hate to admit that)... everyone is trying to save everything from money to power to food... even a breath of fresh air... the damn government is trying to impose taxes on everything... someday my children will have to pay for the air they breathe...

stand up to bullies, even if they are too big for you, and you will at least gain the respect of your friends.

A few years back, my father told me I needed to… learn to become a better listener.
My life has taken an invaluable turn for the better, ever since.

A few years back, my father told me I needed to… learn to become a better listener.
That actually reminds me of something my father REALLY used to say (and I can't believe no one seemed to get my literary quote!!):
"God gave you two ears and one mouth; use them in that proportion."

No... I got the first one...
The first one you mentioned, i instantly recognized from the great gatsby... i thought most people would, and didn't see the need to comment.

my pappy he says to me he says "hmmm, always remember that there is someone bigger and badder than you out there so why go looking for him" and i says to my pappy i says "thank yee kind sir for thine noble advice but i must now sally forth for my wife beckons me" and we bid each other good day and i never saw him again.
*cries a single tear*
This is what Homer Simpson (a father) told Lisa (his daughter) at one point: "No matter how good you are, there are always a billion other people better than you." I think I've left this quote somewhere, but I still love it. It's useful, too.
"Never be ashamed of being yourself. If you know you tried your hardest, that's all that counts."

The best thing my dad ever did for me without ever saying it was letting me learn for myself... he didn't have to give me advice on it

My dad once told me to "keep reading." I suppose he was really surprised with how much I could learn from reading.

Ask about the most amusing one and there would be a really tough competition, one of them being, "Trust no one fully, for no one in life would be truly sincere with you." Probably he didn't realise then that 'no one' ruled him out too, and he was expecting me to take this advice. :p And then of course there are advices which are quite contradictory to the ones stated before. I clearly remember him stating somewhere else, "You have to trust someone now or then, for that's life." Oh dear parents! :p
But there is one he always sticks to, "You don't have to tell your mother about everything, she gets worried easily and emotional as she is, would make a mountain out of a mole-hill." I like this one. Especially started liking it after my mother got mad on me on some little flu (I just told her that I had had ice-cream in the cold that day :p )

I get stressed out a lot with my educational path...and lately my dad has been so wonderful. He doesn't tell me choose one path, or to quit while I am ahead. Sometimes I feel like I am trying to learn everything there is to learn and that I might be pushing myself too hard...but one day when my university was really messing with my credits and education path...my dad said that I have the whole world before me, and plenty of time...just knock off one goal at a time and I can get to where I want to. He told me to always continue to learn.
When I was younger my dad used to tell me that I would be a heartbreaker. Thought that was just something sweet that dads tell their daughters, well...years later I find out my dad was right. And he is so wonderful...whenever some guy would make me cry, he would tell me that it was not worth crying about, someone else would come along. Kind of the cliche "there are plenty of fish in the sea." But that always comforted me, he's put a lot of my guy situations into perspective for me.

Be sure you are both on the same path going the same direction. Darkness has no fellowship with light and one cannot be going south and the other north and be close.

he gives me lots but a few that i remember at the moment are:
1. kung ayaw, maraming dahilan; kung gusto, maraming paraan. (if you don't want it, there are lots of excuses; if you want it, there are lots of ways.)
2. it will pass. (i was feeling particularly bad a bout the results of our debate tournament and i was telling him about it. i was telling my mom and she was just saying, that's life, which by the way i do agree with, but i was just so irked by the debate. then my dad called, asking me how it went, and after all the rambling, he simply said, "it will pass". i calmed down after that.

When I was little, I used to get beat up a lot (I still have lots of scars to prove it ) the other girls where just stronger and meaner. But my dad taught me how to fight. Pealrs of his fighting wisdom:
"Stand strong and face life down"
"Steel-toed boots are a girl best friend" (this one is proven true just ask all the guys I fought in middle school!)
"bite, kick and hold on!"
and "People are stupid. get used to it" (this is still part of my life philosophy)
So, even thought he's psycho. I love my dad. Thanks to him, the last person who tried to steal my purse ended up regretting it. and I learned a bunch of stuff which I really can remember now.
