Anyone have some famous/good ancestors they are proud of in their lineage? My big one is Joseph Priestley, whom I know only a bit about, my mom having told me his story; he's got a great entry on wikipedia. Scientist and theologist, run out of Europe with his library and laboratory smashed and burned, he was one discoverer of oxygen as well as a co-founder of Unitarianism, and also a friend of Emerson.

I wish i had a link to a famous person. That would be cool! A real "Guess who my ansestor is!" thing.
Although thats NOT going to stop me trying to find a link to J.M.Synge!
One of his relatives married an O'Toole from Wicklow, and so did my great grandfather. (only problem is there are a LOT of o'Tooles in wicklow. Ah but one can only dream!)

Thus far, all I know is that I have (IF there is anyone else) is Emperor Charlemagne and Louis VI. There are people of "nobility" in there, but I think they are the most interesting! Since George Washington and Churchill are descedants of Louis', I guess I am distantly related to them! 15th cousin 10th removed, or some sort of connection. However it works! It is all SO confusing! :D
I haven't dug any deeper than that just yet. Unfortunately it is just too time consuming right now. Of course, if I wouldn't spend all my time on LitNet, I would have the time available to do it! ;)

Oh I see!
Well, another person I am impressed to know by a couple of links (not familial) is H.P. Lovecraft. I've just gotten really into him, and I read in his introduction mention of the sci-fi writer Fritz Leiber- apparently they never met, but were correspondents. Well, Fritz Leiber used to live in the same flat as my dad and grandmother, and they were friends. My dad's always been a fan of his work, and tells me his stories sometimes...someday I need to read his work. I think Fritz may have named his son Justin after my dad's name.

oh my, somehow everyone in America is descended from some king or other, while no one in Europe seems to be :(
I don't have any famous relatives or ancestors. well, my greatgrand uncle was a Catholic priest. he travelled around the world (hitching hikes on ships etc) with his friend, an Indian Hindu priest. When he visited New York, my greatgrand uncle hired a car, although he didn't have a driving licence. He sped on Brooklyn Bridge (or some other famous bridge) and when a policeman jumped onto the lane to stop him, he just sped on. So all the policeman could do was jump onto the car's bonnet (hood). When he asked my granduncle what he was doing speeding and driving without a licence, he said "What'd you jump on the road for?" he added that they didn't have bridges in the countryside, where he lived, and besides, he was a priest, wouldn't the dear boy let him drive without a licence.
yeah, the greatgrand uncle is my only claim to fame

I don't give a damn about it but both of my grandfathers apparently do. Quite proud was my maternal-grandfather on being from the line-age of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) that in the decision of my mother's marriage with my father, this thing had got to do more than anything else probably (it was an arranged one and my father, according to the pedigree, also had the line-age matching with my mother).
But I don't see what's a big deal about it. As for the pride, I can understand it, but some people think that they are just superior to everybody else by belonging to some specific caste and are ready to advertise it everywhere - this practice annoys me a lot. One shouldn't be this much proud!

pensive: I feel for you..I thought this practice was over, but it's still very popular...like people addthe prefix 'syed' or something. I always thought that it was slightly incredulous that every other person I meet is a "syed"; it's sort of derogatory, even, to the Prophet's family that such a name is in fashion nowadays.

Well, I have heard of many 'faked pirs' who start calling themselves a syed to gain popularity amongst the people who come to them for spirtual aid or to request them to pray for them. Such pirs claim that they can forsee the future and blood of the Prophet as well as the ability to peer into the future they think would make a good ad to attract poor uneducated people (especially women asking them to pray for a male child or such stuff). In fact, I have even known some educated people when it comes to the wordly degrees who get into their trap....and later these pirs take money away from those people and run away and there have been some cases in the newspapers that they even rape women by calling them in the houses alone so they can do their spell on them.
It seems so weird that people believe in them.....I mean in Quran even it's mentioned that no one knows the 'tomorrow' except Allah. And why would a Holy person want to ask for huge sums of money for just a prayer.....understanding this is just beyond me. Oh well I guess we human-beings believe in weird stuff mostly just because we want to...or when there is no other alternative to lead to happiness...
Anyway, I find it a kind of funny as well as sad. First of all the label 'syed' nearly every pir comes up with, then our gullibility which takes us to them.

I dunno Sleepy, that's a pretty cool story.
I'm American, but my relatives came from Europe in the early 1900s at the earliest, so I don't have any of those famous lineages.
I'm quite proud of my grandmother (now deceased) who wrote a number of historical novels in the 1970s. She was also an actress on Broadway when she was younger. The family myth is that she won the US spelling bee when she was a kid, but I think that myth has since been debunked. She was just really cool, and really smart. And even though her novels are all out of print now, I still think she's cool.
I like to pretend I'm descended from Owen Glendower (through that same grandmother, I have some Welsh ancestry, and some of her novels are about him)

I do a lot of genealogy research in my family trees and it's always fun to find someone famous or infamous hanging on the branches. There have been stories floating around the family for years about different things...one of my mother's cousins married into Charlie Chaplins family. I never believed it until she called me about some research she say I was doing on a genealogy website! James K. Polk, president of us, was a distant cousin of my great grandfather and Allen Ladd, actor, producer, and studio head, was a member of my grandmother's family...but what differences does it all make? I never met them and they never met me except one phone call. Funny thing is Allen Smithee....have to google him. I tell everyone he's my cousin and they believe it. My brothers and I have always had fun with the Allen Smithee connection. It's the only story we ever have any success in making anyone believe!!!

Thanks for educating me! I'd never heard of Allen Smithee(s), so I had to look it up on Wikipedia. Very interesting. :)

My maiden name is Smithee. Allen Smithee is a made up name they used to put as producer or director of a movie that no one wanted to claim. Now the band, if there is one, is lead by a made up person, and all the junk on the net is about a made up guy, and he's the only person I can make anyone believe I'm related to. I think it's funny as heck!!

I know somewhere along my dads family line I'm related to one of the Rockerfellers. And on my Moms side, one of my relatives was an obscure Norwegian Lord, or something like that.

My mother has a book of genealogy that has been passed down through the generations. She mentioned an Earp relation some time ago, but who knows.

I don't think I have anyone famous in my lineage, but I know where everyone immigrated from. My dad claims that I'm descended from some Magyar king, but he's a drunk old schizophrenic who doesn't like to take his medicine. So I take everything he says with a grain of salt.

Although i dont think i have anyone famous in my ansestry, i do know a good bit about some of my ancestors on both sides of the family. My maternal great grandfather on my fathers side was from Fermanagh and joined the Scots Guard and fought in the Boar war. The Nolans and the Kings both came from Scotland, possibly around the Ulster Plantation.
The Bishops where from South Wales and were lace makers by trade, had owned a bit farm in wexford that consisted of a separate mill and coach house. My maternal great grandfather on my mothers side (Bishop) Was a draper by trade and worked in a large drapers that once was situated on college green but was shut down in the 1920s due to its associations with the making of british army uniforms and therefore the uniforms of hte black in tans. His wife, my great grandmothers, sister and brother both fought in 1916, war of independence and Civil War. The brother had also been involved in the howth gun running.
The Bowdens came to Ireland in 1648 with Oliver Cromwell. They came from Plymouth and lived in the ringsend area of dublin from the time they arrived to this very day. They use to be sea Merchants. My Grandfather (mams Dad) was the first member of the family to move to the northside of the city. They werent happy.

I still haven't got any famous ancestors, but I've thought of another anecdote.
my great-grandfather was a sports professor in Prague, so my grandfather and his sisters (my great-aunts? sorry, all these greats and grands are so confusing) grew up there. My great-aunts used to go for a walk on the Vltava river in winter when it was frozen and drink schnaps on the ice, and my great aunt Annie would swallow/eat the schnaps glasses (shot glasses?) :eek2: she died at 87 years of age

Ooooh, I've heard Clan Irvine just signed a peace treaty or something with Clan Keith. There was a 500 year old feud or something?
