Should No Music Day come to America?

Here is an excerpt from Kevin Bergers article of instant wherein he discusses the pros and cons of No Music Day for America . What do you think about it??
Let's share our views on this new aspect of societal phenomenon.

''The divine sound of silence

Britain's No Music Day offers a welcome hush over a noisy world. It can't come to America soon enough.''

''One can dream. What if no music blared from airports, supermarkets, bars, department stores or restaurants? Imagine being able to sit down in your neighborhood cafe and hear your friend talk without having to parse her words through the strains of "Sweet Child o' Mine." My god, that would be something for which to give thanks. On Nov. 21, a surprisingly wide swath of Britain honored "No Music Day." Radio stations, stores, recording studios and scores of music lovers took a laudable vow of musical silence. Should No Music Day come to America tomorrow, it wouldn't be soon enough.''

there are some ppl who say music is also a cause of 'pollution'' ,,,,there are others who say too much music makes the mind dull !

I agree with this idea of a no music day. It would be an almost enlightening experience for those who really appreciated it.

While music is, perhaps, the art form that I respect the most (next to literature, of course), it has become somewhat of a mainstream "thought suppressant" in our society. There are, to me, two kinds of music. Meaningful and useless music. Meaningful music is, unfortunately, mostly deteriorated and I believe almost non-existent. It is music that is truly and sincerely artistically inspired and meant to be an interactive, inspirational experience for the audience. The only current meaningful musicians that pop to mind right away are James Maynard Keenan and his various bands, but I won't argue with any of you about what you believe to be meaningful by my definition, because I am sure that there are many others.

Useless music is mainstream doggerel that fills spaces in the mind with uncherishable junk. Music that is inspired only by money and fame is useless, and even considered a detriment to society in my book. Mindlessly jumping up and down to a catchy phrase is a waste of time and waste of mind, all while supporting "artists" who certainly didn't earn their dollar.

Back to the idea of a no music day. I would welcome such a day openly simply due to the excess of useless music that plagues our society, perhaps people would realize that simplicity is something not to be shunned, but embraced.

They can turn off my music when they pry it from my cold, cold ears...or whatever. I wonder why anyone would not want anyone else to listen to music.

I don't see the point.

Well I live in UK and this is the first I've heard about 'No Music Day'. Perhaps it passed me by in the overwhelming silence?...

I couldn't do it, either. I think it's an interesting idea because I do appreciate silence as well, but I really don't think I could honestly do it.

I think a general no music day isn't a good idea. Why shouldn't people who want to listen to music do it?

What I abhor is being forced to listen to music, especially music I don't like. You can't go shopping anymore without speakers over your head blaring like mad. I remember last Christmas when a store had put up a life-size Santa singing the same four lines of the same old Santa-song (I forget which) over and over again. I fled the store after a few minutes and bought my presents elsewhere. I commiserated the poor salespersons who were exposed to that noise pollution all day long.

So, no music day - no. Music-free stores - yes, please!

I'm with you :)
music free cafés, bars etc would be nice, too, at least for a couple of a days per year.
there's this bar I sometimes go to,.. it's near the univ so it's where all the professors and other univ ppl go (i.e. people who go there to have a conversatoin over a couple of drinks). the furniture and design are kinda yuppy-ish.
but sometimes they play very loud techno music! it doesn't fit in with the look of the place at all and it's impossible to have a conversation when they play this music.
