View Full Version : For Love or for Rebellion?

Throughout the novel, Winston claims that his relationship with Julia is just an act of rebellion against Big Brother. Winston and Julia are carrying out a relationship just as an act of doing something that they are not supposed to. They are going against the Party and that is all their relation ship means. Well also during Part 2, Chapter 4, Winston states that, “At first their love making had been simply an act of will. But after the second time it was different. The smell of her hair, the taste of her mouth, the feeling of her skin seemed to have got inside him, or into the air all round him. She had become a physical necessity, something that he not only wanted but felt that he had a right to.” To me this sounds like he might be looking at the relationship as a whole other angle. He may be concerned with love just as much as rebellion, then again maybe not. Is there something that I am missing here? Does he care more about rebellion as he did at first, or does he actually love this girl? Also, does Julia actually love Winston, or is she still in it for only the rebellion?

No they probably don't love each other, just feel physical attraction. Love is different in that it is a more steady, easy going emotion. Winston feels he has a right to her, not loves her. and vice-versa.

The "love" they share is comletly rebellion. During the first meeting in the woods, the book came out and directly said that.
All the describing words that were used, describe lust. This is something Winston hasnt had, and this is him caught up in the moment. Honestly, it almost is like an obsession between them. Try and think of your first crush, or your first real boyfriend or girlfriend. Its a pretty gfood chance you didnt love him, but its easy to get caught up in your emotions and think you are in love. Thats why love is so dangerous, and thats why Big Brother dissaproves of it. I also believe that with fact that it was rebellion, made him believe he was in love with her also, seeing as though he had been looking for someone to share his hate of Big Brother with.
I doubt Julie loves Winston. She has been commiting this "love" since she was fifteen, and with over 60 men, I think. I believe they are both in it for the rebellion.
The only time I ever see something that shows actual emotion, is when they "held hands". That is the only part were they show actual emotion, not just intamacy for rebellion.

I think the more important question is: what's the difference?
Love can be broadly defined as an intense emotional connection between two people. By comparison to a society like ours, their love is dubious. Compared to the rest of their interactions within their society, the thing they share as morphine is to advil.
It's something better than either of them could've ever hoped for.
Another good question is: why hasn't Julia moved on yet? She's had relationships with a myriad of men, why is Winston so different?
It's my suspicion that Winston is the first true rebel that Julia has ever 'loved,' and that cements something between eachother. And altho Julia isn't a true rebel herself, this might be the first time her spite for the Party's overbearing control has been truly appreciated.
