If Marlene Dietrich were a cigarette
she’d be one of those hyper-elegant ones
at the end of a long ivory and onyx holder
and I would suck deeply of her,
suck that wonderful poison deep,
deep into my lovesick lungs!

If George Bush were a cigarette
he’d be one of those one-handed rollies
tobacco leaking out like government lies
at either end, and I would suck deeply of him,
suck that wonderful poison deep,
deep into my lovesick lungs!

If Benedict XVI were a cigarette

Strong poem! Shows how addicted one can be! The second stanza is particularly great in showing the intensity of addiction and the fact that we are sometimes addicted even if the addiction appears to be a nonsense.
I love the climax of the ending.

Ahhhh, you will be strong.

Nice poem, Jer. I gather you are trying to quit. I myself went through the dark valley of the shadow of nicotine, and I honestly say there was but one way for me: cold turkey. Any other way failed. I didn't try hypnotism, because 1. I'm not certain I believe in it, and 2.) I am not certain that if it does work they could hypnotize me. Shalom and best wishes, mon ami!

Ha, I really, really liked this poem.
The ending was great.
