i was wondering. do we americans have more privacy now in 2007 or did we have more in 1948??? im just wondering because a major role in this book is privacy, or the lack of it. And if we had more privacy in 1948 then where will we be in the future???
do you think we will have a slow loss of privacy untill it comes to what is showed in 1984?????:(

I'm not an American, but I'm pretty familiar with international privacy laws, including USA's.
Actually, privacy laws have ensured that we have the most personal privacy of all time - despite the fact that we have information held in databases, the rights of people to that information is strictly limited by statute in every country. Whether countries choose to work within those guidelines is another question.
In 1948, your doctor, lawyer, priest, teacher and employer would all be quite open in discussing what type of person you were, what state your finances were in and whether you were reliable or not.
Nowadays, signed authorisation would need to be specifically obtained to access that information.
Even in the 1970s, as a young bank officer, we used to exchange information - quite legally and officially - with other banks simply by asking for it. That cannot happen in 2007.

overall I feel the idea of privacy is breaking down, and indeed being opened is preferable
