In 1984 Winston is spending alot of time with Julia. My question is is Winston setting himself up? Is the relationship fake is Winston setting himself up for disaster? Is Julia just an actress that is trying to trap Winston, and get him caught by the thought police. Or is Julia actually serious about her time spent with Winston?

I wondered the same when I first started reading the book, but as I read realized that Julia is out to have some fun..I think she really cares for Winston. They both realized that they would eventually get caught but carried on anyway. I think that Winston knew that with his mindset, he would get caught in something at some point, so why not enjoy the feelings he had for Julia. In the end, he really had nothing to lose.

i don't think that Julia is a secret spy of the thought police it seems like she despises them, but i do think that Winston is setting himself up for disaster. Julia is setting herself up also. Those two being together is very dangerous and if one person were to see them together they could both be vaporized. They bother know that one day they will get caught but they don't care because they are having a good time being with each other. i do believe that Julia is just trying to have fun with Winston and be a rebel by going against the rules. Winston enjoys being with Julia because he can be honest with her and tell her how he feels about big brother and the party.

This brings to mind an intresting question, particuarly with Winston more then Juilia, as I think he is the smarter of the two, is there a part of him that acutally wants to get caught in what he is doing? Does he play with fire so much becasue he knows it will not last and he knows they will catch him, and a part of him knows that there is really no defeating Big Brother, and he can longer continue to live within the that world so though he is too frightend to acutally end it himself or turn himself in, he puts himself in situtations that he knows will get him in trouble.

I questioned Winston setting himself up at too first, but now I believe that she really just wants to have some fun. She feels like life is too short to not break the rules. So, she is willing to break the rules, even with the harsh consequences. I admire her for being able to take risks, and show others that you can break the rules, have fun and not get caught if you take precautions. I admire that she is a risk taker, and wants more in life. It shows that she is smart, not brainwashed, and paying attention un-like the other people. She can be a leader in some situations and not a follower. I feel that she could actually start a revolt and unite the people, if she really put forth effort and committed.

no she just wanted to have fun in the beginning but she then started actually falling for him but as u can see in the end she betrayed him because none of them have enough will power to be a real hero in the book if u look at it really winston is really like the "anti-hero"

No, I think that Julia knows exactly what she is getting herself into, and so does Winston. Besides, why would they spy on Winston for such a long period of time? If they suspected him at that point, they would just take him away and vaporize him, like everyone else. But, just because they are breaking rules together and making a political act against the government, does not mean that Julia is 'actually serious about her time spent with Winston,' or at least not at first. She seems quite unscared of her dim future. She also does not believe that there is an organized underground rebel group. Being with Winston seems to be the only rebellion that she is able to do, which points out to me that as much as Winston believes she can think outside of the 'brainwashed' box, it isn't outside of it by any great distance.

'"You're only a rebel from the waist downwards," he told her.'

She doesn't quite put her heart into it, unlike Winston, who pours his entire being into hating Big Brother.
