:thumbs_up I am from Chinese.
It is hard for one from a non-English speaking country to write an English essay on English literature. However i am interested in Heller's Catch-22.
I am writing a paper on Heller's Catch-22
What puzzles me is that most essays on this novel mainly focus on its black humor, absurdity, illogical...
I just want to write something different.(like the death, women role, or even sex)
Anybody knows any criticism from the psychological aspect?
Your any suggestions will be welcome!
Tks a lot!:

You could write something about the views the military have on the psyhcological impact on Yossarian in the book...

Good point.
I wonder if i can apply Frued's theories in my criticism on this novel.
Say his theory on sex, and death or id,ego and superego
Any more friendly suggestions will be warmly welcomed and thanked.;)

Catch 22 was a favorite reading when I was in college over 35 years ago. Its protagonist Yossarian has a name whose symbolism may be lost by today's reader: the surname is Armenian whose land has been invaded by various groupings for many centuries. It means that they are stuck in a no-win situation.
Today, the expression ''catch 22'' is used by Americans to mean a no win situation and, naturally, it came from this book.
There were many sequences that were illogical --- this reflects the fact that life and its many mishaps are also illogical.
A colonel Scheisskopf was one of the main characters. Back in college we discussed the fact that the surname is German for '' sh*t head ''.
And all throughout there are examples of absurdity after absurdity. Why? Because modern life is so absurd!
The one Freudian book whose theme parallels Catch 22 is Civilization and its Discontents because both deal with socially imposed conformity and the quest for freedom and individuality within absurdist society.
Regretfully, I am not fully versed in Freudian literature and cannot make a further suggestion.
Good luck on your research study and presentation!
