No one knows what a scuzz you are!
How you cheated on that final exam,
pocketed something at the local pharmacy,
made eyes at your wife’s or husband’s
best friend, or took the name
of your Lord in vain.

No one knows
that you are pond scum, a would-be tart
--or how much love you have in your heart.

This is a very good poem, PrinceMyshkin! Loved it. Relates beautifully to what I find myself thinking often, how do we know what others really are. Sometimes it happens that we act like a**holes but this can also have reasons behind it, for example wanting people to get this impression we don't care about anything when we do. And this talks well about the unsurety of human-beings too...

Oh man, where are those quotes when you need them? This reminds me of the saying...you are what you are when you think no one is watching...or something like that.
I'm always thinking what a scuzz I am so thanks a whole heck of a lot Prince, for bringing it up! haha :D LOL:lol: Just kidding, about the bringing it up part.

Speaking of quotations, how about this: "It takes one to know one!"

Many thanks for getting (and appreciating) exactly what I intended.

I like this poem very much, Jerry!!! This is so true that no one knows who we are, not even ourselves sometimes. I know I have trouble to define myself, between who I think I am, who I really am and who I want to be.

May I participate in the group hug?

Perhaps, but I am assuredly scuzzier than thou!

Ah, but possibly there is one who has an idea, however faint, of how much love I have in my heart,,, for someone!

So.....scuzzbuttons, what garment would you be sewn on? ;)

So.....scuzzbuttons, what garment would you be sewn on? ;)

I would be one of those useless robe buttons that no one ever uses (because they are useless ), even to go outside and get the paper! :)

The buttonholes were made by someone's mother, so they are hardly big enough for the button to go through. Once buttoned, forget getting that robe off quickly.

Fortunately, my mother was acceptably scuzzy.

And I love her for it!!! :yawnb: :yawnb: Let me add.

I may be wrong, but I do believe that this is the first time
the word "scuzz" has ever appeared in a poem.

How true it is, Jer. We sweep so much dirt under the rug that we walk at least a foot higher every month!

I would be proud, you know, to be credited as the one who first used it but surely with all the "slam" poetry and hip-hop, that cannot be the case? But it is a tribute to the vitality and vividness of street language, don't you think? God forbid we ever go the way of the French, whose Academie Francaise pronounces on which words are acceptable!

Perhaps your comment might inspire a thread dedicated to poems using scuzz and like words? And should I not be remarked for using "pond-scum" as well?

So true PrinceMyshkin ! This highlights our shadows of our deeds on the past...I loved this one !

Last stanza really cuts deep Prince :

No one knows
that you are pond scum, a would-be tart
[I]--or how much love you have in your heart.

Death is a kind of love
suspended, an afternoon withdrawn
before it began. Hope
leans out over the irresistible pool
a little further, a little

further.

Nothing we know
will sufficiently grieve
that fall into the self.
