When winston went into the pub and bought the old man a drink, he was asking him questions about the past. Why is it that the only thing he remembered was beer, lackeys and top hats? would anyone please help me understand this better?:crash:

It's the only thing he remembers because he lacks a fundamental sense of history. And that's just the way Big Brother wants it.

Orwell's point here is relatively simple: Use history as a way to measure whether or not we're better off now compared to the past.

Winston and this old man have no idea if things are better now.
