Don't read this unless you've already read the end of the book! (I would feel really bad if I ruined it!) At the very end of the book, after Winston is tortured and then set free, and even after he talks to Julia, Orwell writes,"The long-awaited-for bullet was entering his brain." So, did Winston get shot in the head and go insane for his last few moments? Or did he give in, and the bullet was symbolic for his "love" of Big Brother? Either way, I feel really sorry for Winston!

Bullet is symbol of his love for Big Brother, he was cured.
At the end, he admits:''I love Big Brother!''

It would be helpful if you were to put this thread under '1984' instead of merely 'Orwell, George'. I mean, at least I think you're referring to 1984, though I haven't read it yet...and have no need to, now that you've blown the ending for me! :(
Thanks a lot...
