I'm confused with this whole bombs thing. If there are really as many bombs as Orwell first mentioned there were, I forgot the exact number, then wouldn't there be so many more houses ruined? Wouldn't that much carbon monoxide from the explosions be making more lasting effects on the people? And who can even be sure that the bombs are from Eurasia if most everything else the people are being told is made up by the government?

Well first of all, the people of Oceania cant figure out where the bombs are from, and they dont want to. They are told by the government, their savior, Big Brother, that the bombs are coming from Eurasia, and then that answer is good enough for them.

And who is to say there isnt many houses ruined? Orwell doesnt give us enough information to tell us that. And if the carbon monoxide is actually making the people sick, then its obviously not from that, because Big Brother would have told them. The government probably has lies to cover up what effects the carbon monoxide has on the people.

Couple of things - there is never any suggestion that the bombing is frequent and I'm pretty sure the intention is that it happens relatively rarely - it's not a copy of the Blitz.

The carbon monoxide isn't an issue at all - it's not a huge by-product of explosions and fires and there would never be enough bombs to create a CO problem. During WWII, several bombings created out of control firestroms which destroyed everything in the path, yet the CO effect was negligible - and at the time, unnoticeable.

As to the bombs, check out a couple of other threads on this subject - I don't believe they came from any enemy.
