In George Orwells' book 1984 he revisits the shop where he once bought the diary. Inside the shop there is an old man who remembers him. When he enters the shop the old man points out that there is not much stuff insde, but Winston on the other hand says that it is very crowded with stuff without any worth. Crowded with all old things that no one would be able to use in 1984. I was thinking that this could symbolize the people in the book, empty, but full of things without use in 1984. Does anyone agree with this?

yes most certainly the whole society has to walk the streets with nothing on there, they must have a "stone face" Its empty with emotion

I agree with you Randal Johnson2, that is and excellent point. Oceania is a country that is filled with a great amount of people. many are starving and poor and many are filled with ideas. These people are old and have seen the revolution happen before their eyes. They don't like Oceania's ways and cant do anything about it. They are not allowed to show any emotion at all but in their head they are thinking of a million things and ideas but they cant put them to use. Excellent point Randal Johnson2.!
