Chapter 13
The Stranger
The next day Joel woke up he felt brand new and unmarked, as if he had done nothing wrong his whole life. Yesterday he had told his dad the truth about what had happened and he is so relieved, but he was still upset about Tony. Since it was only eleven o’clock Joel decided he wanted to go back to face his new biggest fear, the Vermillion River. Joel new if he didn’t face it sooner or later he would always be afraid of it. So Joel and his father started to drive to the river, when they saw a boy walking on the street. He kind of looked like Tony. He had his jeans on, held his shirt in his hand, and looked as if he just finished working a double shift. “I think he needs a lift Joel, he looks tired enough,” Joel’s father said. “Hey, hey you, do you need a ride,” Joel asked to the boy. The stranger said yes.
When the boy walked up to the car Joel and his father could not believe their eyes. It was Tony back from the dead! Joel hugged Tony so tightly and never wanted Tony to let go. “Tony! What happened to you, where were you, I should have never dared you to swim to the sandbar. I’m so sorry; I’ll never do something stupid like that again…” Joel didn’t even get to finish. “It’s ok I forgive you, When I went under I swam up again and you were gone. I wanted to walk back but just couldn’t I didn’t have the strength. So I stayed with this teenager and his girlfriend. They took great care of me, but now I just want some breakfast,” Tony replied. “I think breakfast would be fine,” Joel’s dad said.
After breakfast Tony, Joel, and his father went back home to tell the Zabrinskys the good news. All the search parties were called off, and everyone was notified that Tony had returned safely home. Everyone was happy to see Tony. They even had a large welcome home party for Tony. It was great to see Tony back, the thought of losing him again would just kill Joel. He never wanted to see anything bad happen to anyone ever again; he wouldn’t be able to bear it. After the party everything went back to normal. Tony and Joel were best friends more than ever. They even still continued with their crazy schemes. Only this time it had to do with chickens and a whole lot of eggs!
