Do you guys remember Chardata.
She was the first person I spoke to at this forum, and I kind of forgot about her, I was looking through old posts (OVER A YEAR), and came across her name.
And what about wilfred, we came toe to toe, and he isn't here anymore either.
Yeah, I remember her! I was actually thinking about her just the other day. She was always very busy with school and band. I hope she's doing ok.
Jay's not been around here lately either. I know it's because she's been busy, but I miss her.:(

The new guys are cool too, but sometimes nostalgia kicks in and you wonder how life has travelled to the point you are at know from the point when you never dreamed of being here. I am graduating in June, and wonder where has all the time gone, It sound a bit like a cliche, but it is true in the truest sence.

stan, i here you buddy. time is relative. some one once said, if you were to burn your hand on the stove, one minute would seem like an hour. if you were to sit with a beautiful girl, one hour would seem like a minute. take my advice, enjoy the moments which you are given. life is all about moments in time. never wish to hurry through the week to get to friday, you have wasted five days of your life to only enjoy two. and everyday stop and enjoy something that does not rush you. like looking at the sun set, or reading a book of your choosing, of reading this sight. if you do not slow your life down, one day you will wake up and wonder what happened to the last ten years. i know i have. i am a work-a-holic, and this is why i joined a philosophy class, and got on this sight. to look at the world through a different perspective and enjoy the thoughts of other great people such as yourself and all those who are on this sight.

wow, I never talk on here, but when I do it's always the same people and I think that in itself is cool. I don't know any of the old people, guess that makes me a new one, though I do remember Jay. I don't know, I always come on here and just look at what people say because I just think it's neat that there are only so few of us who actually talk on a literature network forum, and everyone seems to know everyone else so well, though it appears no one actually has ever met anyone else. I don't know. It's all neat to me, but I don't interfere, I'm just the person who stands in the corner anyways and watches everyone, guess that's what I am doing here. have fun reminicing!

Also, they're on the same record label that Slipknot, Mudvayne, Spineshenk, Coal Chamber, ect.. call home (Roadrunner Records). It's misleading!!! They're the only act on the label that isn't metal. I mean, come on, they're not even rock. They're a pop band. They're like any other boy/girl band exept they play guitars. They blow hard. Eff Nickleback.

i apologize on behalf of all nickleback fans that you have a crappy radio station that plays the hell out of songs, but do try and place the blame where it belongs: with the DJ's, not the musicians. Here we don't hear "How you remind me" hardly ever, as we have access to the newer albums of all genres and bands. Lucky lucky us!

Sorry, I have to step in here and make a clarification. DJs do not program music and they haven't for years. Music on the radio, virtually all music played on the radio in North America, is controlled by a company called Clear Channel. They decide what music you listen to, not DJs, not your local radio station, and if you are listening to the radio, not even you. Which is why we are down to about seven or eight basic radio formats (one hip/hop, one country, one ez listening, one "classic rock", etc.) and no matter where you go in North America, it all sounds the same. The difference between radio in the 'States and radio in Canada is a provision in Canadian law, usually referred to as CanCon, which requires stations to include a certain percentage of music made by Canadians (Canadian Content) each day, but other than that, it's business as usual for Clear Channel.
It's big business, lots of money, the major corporations get rich while creative artists go unheard and the public in general loses out.
Rant over. Again, sorry for the interruption.

Gotta stand behind kik on the Nickelback thing. Sorry. Liked their first album a lot, then they went the way of Creed and the Goo Goo Dolls (i.e. one awesome rock CD, then a ballad hits on MTV and they remake it over and over for the rest of their career).
iTunes is my haven for underground-ish stuff. It's the best I can get, but the bands on there always seem to break into the mainstream like three months after Radio IO or Soma FM or 3WK start playing them. I've discovered some of my favorite bands on there, though. Clearlake, Plus Minus, Modest Mouse, Cooper Temple Clause, Air, Muse -- great stuff.

Thanks! :D It seems to be quite popular. I got harangued when I tried to replace it with my own ugly litso.
Litso? Where's that word from? It seems an Americanly spelled version of the Russian word for 'face'. Well of course I know you meant 'face', but you got me wondering if that word is some American slang, or maybe -I realised after half second of thinking- it is the word used in the Clockwork Orange book? I know the language there is psychedelic, and I clearly remember that even in the translations I read some words were Russian (even if I wasn't aware of it at the time), like 'malchiki' for 'guys' and maybe even other ones but I'm not sure...
Btw I was back after a few days (yesterday I got the bestest(estestest ;)) mark for the first time in my life!!!In the Russian Literature exam:)) and was glad to see that Alex was back!!! The forum wasn't evil enough without him!!!
Btw wb Kik, don't let real life make you forget the world of procrastination!!!
emily655321
06-21-2004, 02:55 PM
Yes, "litso" is "face" in nadsats.
Koa you haven't read the original version of Clockwork?? You have to! It'll be the ultimate test of your language skills, especially all the British sing-song gibberish. I don't know if your knowledge of Russian will make it easier or harder, though, because a lot of it is Anglicized Russian and Slavic words spelled phonetically, as though the kids heard them spoken and adopted them as their slang (for instance, "horrorshow" for "good" comes from the Russian "khorosho.") I've always wondered how they dealt with the Nadsats in translations.
I found this a while back; it has all the Nadsat translations, as well as the language of origin and its root word: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/1974/nadsat.html
These are funny too:
1) automatic English-Nadsat translator:
(version 1.1) http://members.tripod.com/fugilyfred/nadsat/nadsat.html
(version 1.0) http://members.tripod.com/fugilyfred/oldnadsat/nadsat.html
2) The "Tower of Babel" Bible story, translated into Nadsats: http://www.langmaker.com/db/bbl_nadsat.htm
(www.langmaker.com is an awesome site, btw. Some really funny comp-slang definitions.)
BTW, have you seen the original movie, or a dubbed version, Koa? For the obsessed or very bored, this is a pretty cool essay about the language differences between Kubrick's and Burgess' ACO: http://core-relations.uchicago.edu/Volume3/Babinski.html
;) Yes, I'm off my rocker, what do you want? :p
Er...what's Nadsat???
Don't worry, this is the sort of things I'd talk about for ages...I hate cinema but I can become an obsessed scholar when it's about 2001-space odissey (I once found a site about it and became a sort of expert), Shining and the Orange.
Reading the Orange in original language is one of my most important plans for the future. That 'horrorshow/khorosho' thing made me laugh but it's scary indeed, cos I'd make a mess because of my pronunciation of English which would lead me astray. Btw do you know how Russians spell foreign names? Exactly that way, like they hear them, so that Shakespeare becomes Shekspir (in cyrillic of course). It's often hard to recognise them, but lots of fun when you do!!!
Ehm, back on 'topic'...I've always wondered about the translation too, I think it worked quite well but I'm incredibly curious about how the original sounds...
I've seen the movie 3 times but never in original. To see movies in original I should grab a dvd where I can select the language, cos there's no way this lazy country lets us open our linguistic views... If I remember well, the language was quite similar to the book's (though more 'normal', I guess it makes sense to use the same translation...
Do you think there are at least bits of the book available online? I guess it's possible to put up a tiny bit even if copyrighted...
Koa you can always try a google search for `clockwork orange quotes' there are tons of sites that have them. Like
http://www.sciflicks.com/a_clockwork_orange/quotes.html
Eheheh thanks for the tip...
Now I'm being stupid, but is that link you gave a full passage, or random bits? I'm not sure... The language doesnt seem too weird, just I can't figure out much of the context...
emily655321
06-23-2004, 01:01 AM
That's just random quotes from the movie. (BTW, if you haven't deduced by now, "nadsat" is the slang spoken by Alex and his gang, and other malenky baddiwads of the nochy. ;)) Okay, sorry, I love being silly. Here's a bit of Burgess' version of the Surprise Visit scene:
The devotchka sort of hesitated and then said: 'Wait.' Then she went off, and my three droogs had got out of the auto quiet and crept up horrorshow stealthy, putting their maskies on now, then I put mine on, then it was only a matter of me putting in the old rooker and undoing the chain, me having softened up this devotchka with my gent's goloss, so that she hadn't shut the door like she should have done, us being strangers of the night. The four of us then went roaring in, old Dim playing the shoot as usual with his jumping up and down and singing out dirty slovos, and it was a nice malenky cottage, I'll say that. We all went smecking into the room with a light on, and there was this devotchka sort of cowering, a young pretty bit of sharp with real horrorshow groodies on her, and with her was this chelloveck who was her moodge, youngish too with horn-rimmed otchkies on him, and on a table was a typewriter and all papers scattered everywhere, but there was one little pile of paper like that must have been what he'd already typed, so here was another intelligent type bookman type like that we'd fillied with some hours back, but this one was a writer not a reader. Anyway, he said:
'What is this? Who are you? How dare you enter my house without permission.' And all this time his goloss was trembling and his rookers too. So I said:
'Never fear. If fear thou hast in thy heart, O brother, pray banish it forthwith.' Then Georgie and Pete went out to find the kitchen, while old Dim waited for orders, standing next to me with his rot wide open. 'What is this, then?' I said, picking up the pile like of typing from off of the table, and the horn-rimmed moodge said, dithering:
'That's just what I want to know. What is this? What do you want? Get out at once before I throw you out.' So poor old Dim, masked like Peebee Shelley, had a good loud smeck at that, roaring like some animal.
'It's a book,' I said. 'It's a book what you're writing.' I made the old goloss very coarse. 'I have always had the strongest admiration for them as can write books.' Then I looked at its top sheet, and there was the name - A CLOCKWORK ORANGE - and I said: 'That's a fair gloopy title. Who ever heard of a clockwork orange?'
(BTW, if you haven't deduced by now, "nadsat" is the slang spoken by Alex and his gang, and other malenky baddiwads of the nochy. ;))
Yeah, but why Nadsat? I thought by the way you mentioned it that it was something pre-existing... Argh no time to read the quote now :( Laters!
Edit: Found the time :) It's strange, I think I'd hate it cos if I read it and didn't understand something I'd never know if it's because of his language or because of my English :D
I have always had the strongest admiration for them as can write books
Is this trying to sound old-fashioned? Sounds strange, not standard. It even seemed worng at first look, but seeing the oldfashioned speech Alex uses in this case, I guess it might be cos of that.
emily655321
06-23-2004, 03:12 PM
"For them as can write books" is very bad English. ;) It's more of a C.ockney way of speaking. Alex jumps from one way of speech to another -- the Middle English is usually used when he's angry at a friend or insulting them.
Burgess made up the term "nadsat." In the introduction in my book, he says he chose the word "nadsat" because it's the Russian ending to numbers 11-19; it's a play on "teenager," more specifically "teen" (eg. fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, etc). So in Clockwork, "nadsat" is primarily the slang spoken by teens, and it's also the word for "teenager." Sorry, I'm just in the habit of referring to it in an offhanded way. :)
Cool...I've been trying to think if it was Russian, but it didn't ring a bell...though now it makes perfectly sense. (and again my mispronunciation of it took me further from the solution, cos I'd say that as nad-sat, not 'nadzat' as the Russian ;)) So Burgess practically invented a whole slang? I thought it was just some words here and there...
Oh wow good job I asked about that sentence, otherwise I might have taken it as good English ;)
By the way, a question struck me last night: why is this language based on Russian??? Did Burgess have any relations to Russia???
I'm having a Kubrick-phase as his movie Barry Lynon is involved in the exam I'm studying for...So I browsed some sites pretending that it'll be useful and I found here
http://www.indelibleinc.com/kubrick/films/clockwork/
the script of the Clockwork Orange's film! :)
emily655321
06-24-2004, 01:06 PM
Oh, that site's awesome! :D I watched the movie trailer and was laughing and laughing.
I can't remember if/how Burgess had connections with Russia. Obviously he knew the language, but I think it was chosen primarily because he wrote Clockwork in 1960, during the Cold War, and I got the impression that in this hypothetical future world there has been actual warfare between Russia and England -- the British soldiers would have picked up Russian phrases while they were there, and adopted them into their own vernacular, creating Nadsat. They continued to use it when they returned to Britain, one could even speculate as a kind of code to identify fellow members of their "lost generation," who had a new and separate way of looking at the world than those who had not been to war. Of course I'm getting entirely into the realm of the hypothetical now. But I think at that time in history, if one was to imagine a sort of post-apocolyptic future, the USSR would definitely be involved somehow. It was their number one fear.
There was also a code of slang used among gay men in the late 50's/early 60's that sounds remarkably similar to Nadsat. Since people back then could have horrible things done to them if they were discovered to be gay, nevermind what would happen if they hit on someone who turned out to be straight -- this slang was developed so that kind of confusion wouldn't occur. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember what it was called, ever since your first post on this subject, but I can't for the life of me remember. :(
P.S. I think it starts with a P. Or maybe an F?
Ah right, I had thought of the cold war too, but I couldnt find a good reason other than the era...and I thought I was being banal in linking the era to the cold war ;)
It's interesting though, it's a good exercise of Russian ;) I think Emily that your Russian vocabulary is as rich as mine...if not even more ;)

Haha! Doubtful. I'd love to learn it though. One of my life goals is to be able to read Dostoevsky in the original.
 I think you'll need to have a long long life... I've already given up about reading anything Russian in original :( They have too much of a huge vocabulary, it's hard to master it and you'd miss something anyway. I'm so awfully excited when I read something and manage to get the general sense without a dictionary... Cos if I start to look things up, I'd never get out of it (and I generally hate to spend hours on the dictionary).

Think I saw AP on poetry thread not that long ago, still no psycojones, see Stan made it back in one piece, Mike's enjoying not having school, oh yeah, talking about game threads, still no Lara, Zooey got back for a little while too but now is gone again, is it me or den's been gone for some time as well, and hey, waxmephilosophical, your thread's being taken over, loong time no Demona as well. Looking back our friends of old are withering and gone, and new ones only remind us of days once forgotten, My grandmother said that... she was feeling pretty down.
But I am kinda there, I mean the new guys are nice and the newbies are now good friends, but whenever a new "hey i am new" pops up, One has to remember those who have drifted off into the sea of memories never to be heard from again.
I think I scared Libra Swords away... :D Shame, I thought it would take longer... ;)

Those lost either were locked away in a mental asylum, a prediciton of what will inevitably happen to us all, or became miraculously cured of their insane compulsive posting behavior, take your pick be you optomisitic or pessimistic. But eventually all will become lost in some sense of the word.

Sancho there have been terrible things afoot, how keen of you to intuitively know the extent of my adventures. They came to my door, two black boot clad men and they stuffed me in a green suit ten sizes too big and lowered me into a tank and ordered me to shoot at all who dared challege the green. So that night when I steered the tank through the wall I caught them in their whites and brought them down. So they discharged me and declared people who are small enough that the helmets come down infront of their eyes causing misfire not fit for the Army. But I still haven't seen a paycheck.
Reality may beckon, but I can resist temptation,
working customer service though, I've learned cooperation (not bloody likely)
The land of boston is where I currently am
a place where I don't have to exam cram
I scoop ice cream under the title barista
but all I am looking for is a nice siesta? (rhyme-- why bother)
These people all live in a world of high fashion
where I look on wholly without any passion.
There are evil things afoot in this world and I intent to plant myself at their origins so I can learn from the masters.
So long till I have anything more useless to say, and thanks for noticing my glib diatribes.

Well it happened to me as well at some point... it was hard to catch up cos I didnt really recognise the forums anymore, many new people, many new things... I dont remember if this was when I was back from Hungary (most likely) or on another occasion... but then after a while I felt like I belonged here again... Maybe you'd feel like a newbie again, but then you'll get hold of the situation again... I find it much harder to join forums where there are lots of old members who know each other really well and even in person and I always feel like a minor member, whose words are less important than someone else's cos I'm not "into" the community as they are... Here at least there are usually no differences between oldbies and newbies, which is cool and probably the reason why many newbies post like 400 messages a day...;)
and where's amuse? havent seen much of her lately.

It certainly is becoming harder and harder to post. It is as though I can find little to say in reponse. And there seem to be so many other things to do physically around me, that I think what happens to the lost ones is they are sucked into that realm of participation in the world around them. Perhaps they become wonderfully functioning human beings-- not to say that manic posters are not...persay.
Well simon, that's it...they get involved in real life... I'm not sure we are perfectly functioning real humans, speaking for myself at least... the lost ones get out of here and find a place in real life and we both miss them and kinda envy them but at the same time pity them a bit for losing us...but we wonder what they'd found out there that keeps them there...
(hope my use of 'we' doesnt offend anyone, that's what I feel but I try to imagine I'm not the only one...)
Been thinking about psycojones, he just... disappeared. All the lost and misplaced ones better be doing ok.

...many come. few ever really 'leave'. Years from now, when this site has burgeoned into its deserved fate, the lost shall still periodically visit if only to stir fond memory. This is not a bad thing. There are many incredibly talented people here, and many who fear life's direction, worry their future until it is, or seems, raw, and yet they carry on, they share fresh insight, share their stutters and staggers and winning strokes and so this site acts as a place of birth, a beginning point for bright futures.......and no one really truly leaves.........................

Hi optimisticnad, I've been seeing you around lately but we haven't really been introduced (did you post on the "Introduce yourself here and say hi" thread and I just missed you?). Anyway, just thought I'd wave hello since it's not good to have newbies feeling bad and isolated . Luckily you've had Rachel, one of our nicest members here to welcome you (she just posted some lovely pics of herself on the photoalbum looking very un-granny like, but I agree that she's just as sweet as one ;)). And don't worry, I'm sure we'll all wonder "where's optimisticnad gone?" if you ever disappear for some reason (which we'll just hope you won't).

I suddenly had a vision of looking like the granny from tweetybird.Oh and you should see Petrarch's Love's pictures. She is a dream princess. And one day she shall marry a prince and we all will be invited to the ball. And I hope I get to baby sit all the little princes and princesses. And Petrarch's love is one of the most understanding and compassionate and incredibly wise people Ihave met in the whole of my life!
verybadmom is in Calgary still I think going to university. she is pretty and a real go getter. I hope we hear from her soon.

   Rachel seems to have confused this with the Compliment the PAM thread, and she's applied all these lovely compliments to me when they obviously should be given to her instead. Thank you for your sweet thoughts, Rachel, and not only can you help babysit my little princes and princesses, but I will be sure that my prince's charming older brother marries you and you too will be a princess and live happily ever after. You will be loved and cherished by all the people in the kingdom and little Hasia can wear a princess crown all the time. :)
P.S. You mean this Granny Rachel? Maybe we'll both look like that someday when we're little old white haired princesses.

To get back to the purpose of this thread, I was just wondering the other day what has happened to Madhura. She's obviously decided to leave. She erased all previous posts except the ones on a locked thread that I guess couldn't be accessed to be erased. I hope that she is well, and ekeing out some happiness for herself in the world. It's strange and sad not to know what happens to people when they leave here.

hullo pretty girl. you sound like a teacher. right...back to the thread
I get emails still from Honey(Madura), she deleted the posts because, having reread them she felt too naked, too exposed with those thoughts 'out there' to be read by strangers. By nature she is very closed and private and felt she had erred by posting.
She is busy with some things right now and no I don't think she will be back except perhaps to pm others or read our posts. But she is alright.
YAHOO I SHALL BE RELATED TO PL. START THE CELEBRATIONS. AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU I SHOWED MY SON YOUR PICTURE,ONE OF MY SONS WHO IS VERY HANDSOME AND SHY AND HE THOUGHT YOU VERY VERY PRETTY.

Oh Rachel I'm so glad you're so good at keeping in touch with everyone. You keep us all connected. I'm glad to hear Madhura is doing alright. I'm glad she was just shy about keeping the posts up, I was afraid she had gotten angry at us or something. Tell her hello from me if you are in touch and that I wish her all the best. :)
Oh and tell your son thank you for the compliment. How old is he, by the way? I don't think you've mentioned before.

I actually had a wonderful email from her this morning. she is fine, really.
sweet girl, a few ten by twelve pictures of you and later you and your dollies for my scrapbook for baby hasia at my email would be highly appreciated.
Further, I got an email from Mono this morning, he is nearly finished his preceptorship to become a nurse, he is doing fine although naturally very exhausted. He is and always will be one of my favorite people.
Psyche has been unwell for a bit now,had surgery, but I am sure she will be feeling better very soon.
baby Samercury emailed me that she has two more grinding weeks to go for school and then all will be over and she will be back full force.

Hello baddad! Nice to see you!
I suspect that some of us come and go like Kipling´s cat, not lost, just taking a walk by ourselves, before coming back and keeping company -
"But when he has done that, and between times, and when the moon gets up and night comes, he is the Cat that walks by himself, and all places are alike to him. Then he goes out to the Wet Wild Woods or up the Wet Wild Trees or on the Wet Wild Roofs, waving his wild tail and walking by his wild lone."

it is glorious to 'hear' your wonderful voice once more. You are always missed. I think of you as a time traveller for some reason, a very mystical sort of person.

My heart was broken when I found out Rachel was no longer here. That was the unkindest cut of all.
Petrarch, I believe Elizabeth said she was busy this summer and would not have that much time for lit net.

Virgil--Thanks for letting me know Elizabeth's just been busy. I seemed to recall her mentioning having health problems and I was concerned that she is O.K.
Pensive--I'm sorry, I wouldn't have brought it up this way but I thought it was common knowledge that Rachel has been banned from here. You can see that her name is gone from the members list. Last time I was in touch with her she expressed wishes that everybody not make too big a deal about it or be too sad, but just to say she misses everyone and sends you all her love.

About banning.. you've got to realise that you do not always see the whole picture here. The decision to ban someone is *not* taken lightly, but ultimately done to maintain the integrity and best possible atmosphere for as many as possible at this site.

What do I have to do to be banned??? I am asking it because I don't want to be banned...:D , but someone might think that sometimes I'm a little bit evil and so(maybe because of Brothers  ), but I'm just joking, no hard feelings...

Wow, I feel so incredibly stupid. I have been wondering for ages where Rachel and Mililail were...and now I know. . I guess I got caught up in my own stuff and missed the departure of two very kind people.
Whatever the reasons for their leaving, I will still miss them.

They didn't leave, they were banned for contravening the forum rules.
