When Winston takes a walk in the labyrinth of London, he passes by many groups of proles. He observes them from a distance and when he gets closer he doesn't look at them too much. When Winston walks by them, they all stare at him, like he is someone different from a different world. When he goes into the pub to ask the old man questions, everyone stops and looks at him for a while. Winston only looked different at that point because of his overalls. Is that the reason for him being stared at? Or is there any other reason?

I don't know exactly why, but I think the reason they all stop everything they're doing to stare at Winston is because he's in another "class" and he's kind of on the wrong territory. They see this from his blue overalls and it's severly obvious and it's unusual to them to see someone from the party to be in a prole pub because most of the time you don't see someone who isn't a prole down there without some kind of business. It is really suspicious for a non-prole to be there since proles and non-proles usually don't mingle, so people being as nosey as they are stop and stare. :yawnb:

The proles veiw Winston completely differently than each other almost as if he is not one of their species. This is because they don't know what the party members do and connect them with the Thought Police. They are scared around party members and therefore cautious.

There is no actual crime for a person from the upper or lower party to go to the prole section. But since people tend to look down on the proles, party members rarely go to that section. I'm guessing they usually only go there when they need to buy something like razors. So it seems quite weird for someone like Winston to just go to a bar and start talking to the proles.
