Is it possible that in our future that we could have global survallence? Would our government go though so much money/time to put them in every room of the country...I think is from the lack of trust from people:idea:...when really our government can do almost anything, just not pick people for positions, they can declare war and many other things. How would they see whats going on in every room, that would be a ginormous room to get all the videos. I hope Orwells ideals in this book arent meant to be.:eek2:

When Orwell Wrote this book in 1948, he was predicting life in 1984, not past the year 2000. No i do not think that our government could ever do anything that relates directly to the telescreens being put all over the place. We are already under many cameras all over the place and we do not even no it a lot of times, but for the government to get cameras all over such as the telescreens in 1984 is very highly doubtful. So to answer your question, I say no it is not possible. We as people understand that we have power and we would not allow this to happen. The people in 1984, at least most of them, do not realize that they have power, therefore they allowed telescreens to happen. I guess you could say they allowed there own horrible fate. The people in the book could easily stop it from happening if they realized how much power they had. We realize this, so we would not allow it to happen. Besides, it just sounds plain absurd anyways. I dont think the government could ever get telescreens in all of the rooms of the world.

In terms of the possibility, we need to look at the technical issues and it is certainly possible.

Within a couple of years, in England, it will be impossible to be outside a building and free of surveillance.

As regards the issue of watching everyone, that can largely be done by computer, exactly as the e mail comment notes. While not every e mail is read, every e mail mentioning certain key words can be, and frequently is. A person could be "watched" by a computer which only activates a warning if certain words are spoken.

Whether the idea is feasible in terms of people accpeting it - highly unlikely. People will take being seen in public, but a man's home is still pretty much his castle.
