View Full Version : The Exquisite Art of Making and Eating Peanut Butter Sandwiches.

So a few minutes ago I had a rumbly in my tumbly and I said to myself,

"Self, I think it's time for lunch."

I didn't feel like making/eating anything too fancy. So one of the first things I thought about was a peanut butter sandwich. So I made one. It's a toasted peanut butter and butter sandwich, to be exact. With milk.

Now, what kinds of peanut butter sandwiches do you like? I think maybe it tells a lot about someone. I mean, when I was little, I ate tons of peanut butter and butter sandwiches, and for some reason all the other kids thought it was funny because they all ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and they had never heard of a peanut butter and butter sandwich. And look, I'm still a loser, eating peanut butter and butter sandwiches.

There are so many kinds like

Peanut butter and jelly (What kinds of jelly? :D)
Peanut butter and banana (mmmm)
Peanut butter and honey (MMMMMMM)
Peanut butter (eh, it fills the stomach up)
Peanut butter and mayonnaise and pickled squid brains and yogurt with a hint of nutmeg (MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. :p)

Think of all the possibilities! Do you toast the bread? Do you cut the crust off? Do you use two slices or do you use one slice and fold it over? Do you drink milk with yours or what? (A bit off-topic. :D)

Let's not forget about the different kinds of peanut butter. Smooth or chunky? I prefer chunky.

Or are you allergic to peanut butter? (My sympathies. :()

Is your kid still addicted to peanut butter sandwiches for dinner even though they're in their teens or older? Are you still addicted? Do you have any funny peanut butter sandwich stories? :D

Isn't this the most philosophical discussion you've ever seen? I'm beginning to think I have a hidden passion for peanut butter sandwiches.

Let's thank George Washington Carver, shall we? And the Earl of Sandwich man, who popularized the sandwich, but did not invent it. (Look, I know about the history of the sandwich. Shove me in the high school bathroom toilet now, please.) Apparently the sandwich was invented by a Jewish man named Hillel the Elder a loooong time ago.

IT'S PEANUT BUTTAH JELLY TIME!!!!! ("http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/banana) Peanut buttah jell-ay! Peanut buttah jell-ay!

Hey, look, I finished my sandwich. :D

Above is the best peanut butter in the world. All natural, too! Even though I’m a dark chocolate lover, the white chocolate wonderful really is wonderful.

I love PB with homemade jelly- red plum or sour cherry, but there’s more to life than PB&J like PB and cream cheese or PB and bacon. Also PB is good in or on pancakes and crispy treats.

Here in the south many people fry their PB sandwich, but I never have.

I doubt that peanut butter is popular out of the USA (or maybe the whole American continent? or maybe anglo-saxon countries) so possibly a good part of the forum has no possibility of being involved in such a philosophical discussion ;)
When I heard peanut butter in American TV series I couldn't really imagine how it would be like. Then I think the first time I saw it was at a hostel where a Canadian (?) girl made me try it. Then it appeared in our supermarkets too and my brother had a phase of addiction to it. It was ok but too... kind of dense... and doesn't work well with our kind of bread, although yes it might make sense on a toast...

Still, I'd choose Nutella... do you have Nutella in your countries?

Never heard of it! I shall commence research on this "nutella".

According to Wikipedia, it was exported to the US too but apparently not anymore and it was expensive.
I have phases of not being wild about it or of preferring fake versions, but I had some at a friend's a couple of weeks ago after I think several years, and now all I'm thinking about is buying some...:D

I have like, four jars of Nutella in the cupboard! =P I like apricot jam with my peanut butter sandwiches, and there HAS to be milk. One of my friends puts M&M's in hers. O.O Talk about filling.

As far as sandwiches, I'm fond of crunchy peanut butter with seedless raspberry jelly, and milk is absolutely a must. My favorite mode of peanut butter consumption, however, is a very thin layer of smooth peanut butter spread on a warm home made crepe, topped with sliced banana and drizzled with honey. I would probably substitute Nutella in my crepes though, if they sold it here. I have very fond memories of warm nutella and banana crepes from the street vendors in Paris on cold afternoons. C'est magnifique!

Peanut Butter is good.
Jelly is good.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches is not good.
It's disgusting and I can't see how people like it.
(But people have their opinions, I guess)

I'm a big fan of vegimite myself, but nutella seems to do the trick as well.
----Vegimite I will have every day and I will never get tired of it.

I eat peanut toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the morning, sometimes openfaced, sometimes the traditional two slice sandwich. I really like to put Cheetos, Doritos, Tostitos, or potato chips on my PB & J. Favorite Peanut Butter....Skippy Crunchy! Favorite Jams/Jellies/Preserves...Grape, Strawberry Jam & Jelly, Raspberry Jam, and Huckleberry (very expensive, but very tasty).

My grampa used to make us a peanut butter and butter sandwiches. My brother and I thought the butter was strange, but we were always so hungry by lunch time when we stayed at their house, that we just took what we were given. And the butter wasn't that bad. And I remember being at home after that and my brother made himself a peanut butter and butter sandwich, even though we did have grape jelly.

But normally, I prefer peanut butter on wheat with strawberry jelly. Sometimes, I like my peanut butter crunchy, and sometimes I like it creamy.

also, a peanut butter smoothie for any health nuts out there, is really good.

you get your chocolate protien powder, a little milk, some vanilla yogurt, ice, a teaspoon of peanut butter and some blackberries or blueberries and put it int the blender. You get dairy, protein and fruit all in one serving and it's very good and filling.

*** Great idea for a thread! I was getting kinda bored with this forum***

Peanut butter french toast is a favorite of mine. I just spread two thin slices of bread with the PB then stick them together. Then just make french toast as normal. It is really great for filling your kids up at breakfast time since the PB keeps them from getting hungry again really quick.

Who needs bread????? Just plain peanut butter is fine with me. :p

But, occasionly, when I do eat a peanut butter sandwich, I use peanut butter, and . . . that's about is. I'm not too fond of it with jelly, it makes the sandwich sticky. Oh, and I use smooth, only because it's the only one my dad likes. And my mom won't buy peanut butter unless it's low fat.

Yes, I know, I'm soooo original. :D

When I was younger, and I first heard about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches it did make me think that Americans were very odd indeed. Why on earth would you put jelly on a sandwich, let alone mix it with peanut butter. Jelly is something you have with ice cream, or in trifles, or if you're really lucky a knickerbocker glory.

Even when I found out that jelly to you guys is jam to me it still seems weird, in fact I almost can't think of anything more disgusting. Ugh!

I'm a purist with my peanut butter sandwiches. White bread (Warburtons preferably), very fresh and still squishy. Lashings of butter and crunchy peanut butter on top. Peanut butter has to be Sunpat brand. Yum. yum, yum.

My husband has cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. He would probably throw up if I put jam on it. He doesn't mix sweet and savoury things.

Nutella is good. You used to be able to get really small pots of it with a little scraper thing attached which meant that you could just eat it out of the pack.

What a refreshing topic Lily Adams :)

I am now compelled to mention Marmite. Mmmm Marmite (drools).

Yay, for George Washington Carver. This big kid (me!) is still addicted to peanut butter. I love it too. I prefer creamy over chunky but i don't mind either. Love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches too, preferably with dark concord grape jelly. Never had it with either banana or honey or with squid brains (:p ) but I'll have to give it a try.

Two stories I guess with peanut butter that I can think of. One is that i used to force my mother to make me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for school lunch every day. I must have been about eight or nine. My mother would ask me if I wanted something else and I always said no. Other kids at school wanted my peanut butter and jelly and would try to trade for it. ;) Other story is that I invented this sandwichas as a kid: four layers of toast, and one layer would get butter, one jelly, one cream cheese, and the last peanut butter. I don't know if I was the first to do this, but i thought of it on my own. I haven't had it in years, but it was good. Too many carbs now for my age.

Oh, and Lilly I'm sure your supermarket has Nutella. It is absolutely heavenly. I keep it at home too, but I eat it right out of the jar without any bread.

I love me PB&J sandwhiches. It's one of the great treats I didn't have to give up or fumble with too many ingredient replacements when I became vegan.
Have you heard of apple butter? I don't honey and most jellies are kinda sugar so I often have my PB&J with wholegrain toast, organic apple butter, and organic CRUNCHY PB. Crunchy is the only way to go with PB :P
I have organic rice syrup instead of honey, but it tastes just as good :D
Mmm...this is making me hungry!

I gave the dog some pb once and it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. She kept smacking her lips - she was concentrating really hard on eating that. It's almost as funny as putting tape on the kitten's feet and watching her walk around and struggle with it. or making her wear the elephant hat.

Marmite and Vegemite are both yeast extract - the difference is the branding - Marmite is British, Vegemite Australian. I think, if I remember rightly, that Vegemite isn't as strong as Marmite. It's true that you either love it or hate it, and it must be spread thinly - it's incredibly strong, so a jar of Marmite lasts a very long time! More about Marmite here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite

Do you have Twiglets in USA? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twiglets
Twiglets taste of Marmite. Twiglets are the litmus test of whether you will like Marmite or not.

If you like peanut butter, don't thank Jif or Skippy et al.
Thank George Washington Carver.

You know, back in my youth (almost at the time of Carver,
no, I kid, I kid) we never heard about peanut butter allergies. Now we hear numerous stories about it, especially in regard to the stuff being banned in certain school districts. (That educators are frightened to death by that contraband substance -- goobers! -- was satirized
in a rerun of "The Simpsons."

But even those who aren't allergic to P.B. should be wary of its fat content. Yours truly is not a big fan of pb and j but another lunch staple. Please check out:

They must be apartments. That store is in Greenwich Village, and here is a google image of a near by street to show you what the neighborhood looks like:
