That Four Letter Word !
by mazHur
How can I forget
That four letter word
which played its toll
on me!
I can never forget
Nor anyone else can
for one reason
Or another,
that four letter word,
which has unfairly brought
to some tears,
to others smiles.
Ah, that tiny bit
of assembled letters
which controls
this world
you and me
and all around
dead and alive,
below and above
the earth and the skies
and in between,
has no eyes,
no heart,
no judgment,
not rationale,
no logic
no rules no discipline,
not even a pinch of horse sense,
yet he is the king
of kings
boss of bosses,
the master of our destinies,
a virtuously vicious
circle, a halo, a phantom,
surrounding everything.
you and I are mere slaves to him,
yet he doesn't care the least.
he does what comes to his mind,
has a whimsical mind of his own.
he's an invisible magician,
enigmatic, merciless,
with unimaginable sleight of hand
and magical tricks,
more weird than the occult,
ghastly at one time,
sweet at other.
when our plans go wrong
when scientists suffer
results contradicting data,
when things happen
as they shouldn't,
when love turns into hate
and hate into love
this craziest of all
this damn four letter word
has definitely played its toll!
he favors whomever he wants,
ruins the deserving,
builds the rogues;
he's like god
works in his own
mysterious ways;
Had he been a three letter word
like god,
I might have taken him for
him;
but in his purest form
he's a four letter word,
as powerful as god himself,
and his name is Fate!

I thought it would be time- I'm not sure I give fate that much stock. I klike to think that my actions will amount to more than just the wimsy of fate. I liked the line Not even a pinch of horse sense. this was fun to read.

Mme, if their was no 'fate' our plans would never go wrong.
If actions could fetch heaven then all the bearded clergy who worships their Gods would lodge there and enjoy in the hereafter.
Have you ever thought why so many ppl can't succeed eventhough they work so hard?
Why does some drunk driver has to hit against my shack? The driver's action was wrong but why did I suffer?
Why fools make houses and wise live in them?

These are all good arguments, but it must still take more than fate
here is another poem about fate that I think you'll like.
Fate
by Ralph Waldo Emerson
That you are fair or wise is vain,
Or strong, or rich, or generous;
You must have also the untaught strain
That sheds beauty on the rose.
There is a melody born of melody,
Which melts the world into a sea.
Toil could never compass it,
Art its height could never hit,
It came never out of wit,
But a music music-born
Well may Jove and Juno scorn.
Thy beauty, if it lack the fire
Which drives me mad with sweet desire,
What boots it? what the soldier's mail,
Unless he conquer and prevail?
What all the goods thy pride which lift,
If thou pine for another's gift?
Alas! that one is born in blight,
Victim of perpetual slight;—
When thou lookest in his face,
Thy heart saith, Brother! go thy ways!
None shall ask thee what thou doest,
Or care a rush for what thou knowest,
Or listen when thou repliest,
Or remember where thou liest,
Or how thy supper is sodden,—
And another is born
To make the sun forgotten.
Surely he carries a talisman
Under his tongue;
Broad are his shoulders, and strong,
And his eye is scornful,
Threatening, and young.
I hold it of little matter,
Whether your jewel be of pure water,
A rose diamond or a white,—
But whether it dazzle me with light.
I care not how you are drest,
In the coarsest, or in the best,
Nor whether your name is base or brave,
Nor tor the fashion of your behavior,—
But whether you charm me,
Bid my bread feed, and my fire warm me,
And dress up nature in your favor.
One thing is forever good,
That one thing is success,—
Dear to the Eumenides,
And to all the heavenly brood.
Who bides at home, nor looks abroad,
Carries the eagles, and masters the sword.

I thought it was going to be love.

I liked the poem by Emerson--thx for posting it.

Amp, your naiveness made me laugh ! I had purposely played pun with the ''four letter word'' to see how readers end up reading the poem  :) ;)

oops! that's really funny.
What I should have actually said had been that you substituted Fate with a 3 letter word to get at its meaning.

I see.

Yes, I thought that was obvious. Around these here parts 'four letter word' usually refers to a rather naughty one. So, somewhat like the use of impotence in the title of a poem, it grabs the attention. ;)

Really!
I wonder why that 'rather naughty' word didn't come to my mind in that ungodly hour of night when i scribbled down that poem!;)

Should I forget

Ah,that four-letter word,
that harbinger of tears
and smiles.
Ah, that tiny bit

you and me and all that's around
dead or alive,
below the earth or up the sky,
has no eyes, heart, sense of judgment,
bereft of rationale and logic,
shuns rules and discipline,
has no mind no heart,
yet he is the king of kings,
the master of our destinies,
a virtuously vicious circle,
a halo, a phantom,
surrounding everything.

yet he least cares .
Enigmatic as he is ,
he would do whatever comes to his mind,
like an invisible magician,
unpredictable , merciless,
adept at unimaginable sleight of hand

more weird than the occult,
ghastly at one time,
pleasant at other.

At one job I once had the boss got really angry with me because I used an "F" word -- no, not THAT one --
the word was "full-time."
The boss said, "How DARE you ask for full-time!"
It's true! I kid you not.

Hmmm.......so that's it. I think I should change the title of the poem to Fate
anyway, thanks for your attention and encouraging words
