The Little Poem

Please don't dig at me,
don't poke me,
don't turn me inside out.
I beg you not to expose me.
I'm trying so hard to just lie here
and be something sweet,
or sad, or mean, for you.

I know why there is global warming.
The stars are getting closer.

I am not being sarcastic when I say this is so tender, as though the poem was a new puppy who just pulled a tablecloth and dumped a vase of flowers on the floor.

It is sweet in the face of knowing that we enjoy taking these words apart as well as putting them together. And the word mean sort of makes it sweet like baker's chocolate.

"Little" in length perhaps but not in some other, more meaningful way. That progression from the immediately understandable "sweet," through "sad" (one goes, Hunh? why should someone be trying to be sad?) to the profound reversal of one's expectations in "mean" - mean for someone? - how painful that is.

Did you, I wonder, have to restrain yourself from going on and elaborating? - and thereby take a whole lot away from the succinctness of this.

Man (so to speak)! Sometimes less is a whole lot more!
