I find 1984 very confusing it is a hard book to read:flare: . But my question is why does Winston not talk to anyone he works with? He works in his cubicle but never talks to anyone even next to him. Does the privacy of the people in the book symbolize something?

I don't think he talked to anyone because of fear. His fear and their fear. They never knew who was going to report them for a real or unreal infraction.

Correct, not to mention that the place was almost guaranteed to be bugged. If they're watching you on telescreen all the time at home, it's highly unlikely any freedom from surveillance would be allowed at work.

I think it might be the saying "ignorance is strength",if Winstons co-workers don't know what he is talking about in his articles, then they are strong and standing tall to the telescreens and to Big Brother.Possibly even showing that privacy is key and they don't want to say anything because of the telescreens that tape everything they do and say.

In Winston's case, at the Ministry of Truth, it might be because he and his colleagues are in opposition. In the book Orwell mentions Winston and another worker changing the same article. If they spoke to each other, the Party would only get one story. It is also probably caused by fear of surveilance or betrayal.

Nope, you've got that slightly qrong. Winston imagines another worker doing the same job and someone choosing one version over another. It may be happening, it may not.
