And I am still slightly confused about the entire concept of love and marriage in this book. I understand that the goal of Oceania is to completely get rid of all emotions, and I also understand that marriage is only granted to individuals who seem to have no interest in one another.

I suppose my question in all of this is- What inspired Orwell to write that the future would have such strong regulations and rules; especially on love? I do not know much about Orwell, but I am wondering if there was something in his life (love related of course) that infuenced his writings?

I won't give anything away, but I believe that there is almost nothing truly emotionally stunted in Orwell's point of view. He simply recognizes that the family unit, as we traditionally know it, is something that would put priorities before that of the Totalitarian state. So, the Totalitarian regime of 1984 seek to destroy and alter the Family unit.

I understand what you're getting at alabamagirl, I mean, why is love such a threat as opposed to all the other emotions like hate and rebelion? Wouldn't love keep the people happy instead of hostile?
