I am stunned by Orwell's great foresight. He took what he knew from the past and present to show a form of society for the future. His conclusion is eerily sound. The power the children have in his book is outrageous! The kids set an old lady on fire and get praised. They are taught at a young age that talk of freedoms and insecurities about the government are traitorous. They have tremendous influence. Yet, in this day and age, you can see the infuence of youths. The market mostly depends on chilren and teens. There are music stores, clothing stores, electronic devices. It is also, in my opinion, very scary how desenseitized the children are towards violence. The Parsons' kids threw a tantrum that they couldn't see the hangings. The movies showed were all about wars and blood. The crowds were screaming with delight. The society he creates is very violent. This is shown in today's society. On MySpace kids can post videos, if that's the correct terminology. Fights are viewed all the time. In school, I hear kids talk about how lame the fights were. I don't like fights but classmates love to watch them. It's an ordinary, mudane subject in school because it happens so often. We need to regain our sense of dignity and show some horror to the violence we are exposed to. We can't keep brushing it off like it's nothing.
