The three oxymorons seem to be everywhere in the book. Its a sign of the Big Brother party. There slogan if you would call it that.

My interpretation on these three oxymorons:

Ignorance is Strength is easy it saying keep them dumb you will be more powerful and less likely to be overthrown. If you look at society today any good dictator makes sure his nation is extremely ignorant therefore rebellion is less likely. Orwell was right in predicting this for the future

War is Peace is also simple in order to have any peace you have to have war all countries disagree and many times the disagreements are fixed by sending young men and women to war. War= Peace whether it be now or 20 years down the road.

Freedom is slavery is not so easy. The BB is trying to sway his citezens away from complete freedom. Although they have no laws in oceania BB is saying if your completely free you have many responsibilities if your a slave all you have to do is follow my directions and there is no trouble. Any dumb IGNORANT person would agree and would happily become a slave because why would they technically want to be a slave for freedom with all of those responsibilities when they only have to follow a few simple rules in slavery.:flare:

your last point seems to be very closely related to what certain large governments of today, which cannot be named due to the restrictions on the board (but hint hint i think i heard somewhere they invaded Iraq in the last 20 years), in which they say that in order to gain security we have to give up a little freedom. and the same nation can equally be said to comply with the first two maxims in your post...

:thumbs_up I think that your interpretation of "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength", is expressed in a very suitable way. I'd like to provide you with my interpretation of the slogan.

I think that War is Peace means just what it sounds like. When there is war with an outside enemy, there is peace within the nation that is engaged in the war. When there is war people become nationalistic and band together to battle the enemy. They feel a sense of patriotism and are even more loyal to the government than before. Past crisis with the government may disappear, because the government is no longer seen as the people who make everyday life a struggle, but the great and heroic protectors of the people! There is also the fact that much of the society is afraid of the enemy and looks up to and depends on the government for protection, the government all the while gaining their allegiance and trust.

Freedom is Slavery is what you have already pointed out, when the government attempts to disuade the people from wanting freedom because of the hardship and responsibility of getting and maintaining freedom. They convey that slavery is easier than freedom and therefore freedom is not needed nor should you want it.

I believe that Ignorance is Strength means that when the people are unaware of something they are better off, or at least that's what the government wants them to think. I mean what they don't know won't hurt them...right? The ignorance of the people gives strength to the government.
