Mother

Swollen lips gave kisses,
To feuding children in morning race,
Never raised a voice in anger,
As she put on her daytime face,

Battered and bruised,
Her bloodshot eyes would gaze awhile,
As she buttoned up my shirt,
Her love for me showed in a smile,

Her body was the wall,
That stood to shield us from his fist,
She would guide us from the horror,
Of her blood upon the mist,

Tiny hands muffled the screams,
In a cupboard I would hide,
As the tears ran down my cheeks,
I sang sweet songs whilst she cried,

We were all she had,
The very reason to her life,
Shaking hands told bedtime stories,
In the tranquility of night,

And in those moments I knew,
She would never leave our side,
As I gazed beyond my window,
Unto the stars upon the sky,

Wishing we could leave,
Upon a shooting star,
So we could go on holidays,
And mother drives the car,

Time has passed I know,
And the bruises slowly heal,
And her devotion has never wavered,
Even though her pain is real,

She is my mentor in life,
Her words of wisdom so profound,
I am still a child in her embrace,
When there is no one else around.
