hi, i was quite stuck on something i have for my school work.
the question is 'given Orwell's own political leanings, what would have motivated him to write such a condemnation of Stalinist Russia?'

thanks for any help possible

God that is a very good question! I wouldn't have a clue but would love to hear someone with more intellect than me to answer this.

If I were to attempt to answer this question, I could only say that Orwell did not believe communism work because he could see the inevitable tyranny that would result when power is centralised and is in the hand a designated group, like the pigs. We see at the end, the pigs were no different to the humans. They change the rules to suit them (the two leg is bad rule).

I don't think he condemned them, he just gave very objective view on situation ( actually, bad opinion actually is a condemnation :) ) . He showed what are they trying it to show to be and what does it really look like. He obviously didn't like communism and was aware of it's pros and cons( although I can't remember any good things) so he showed it a brilliant way.

I think there were two reasons why Orwell hated totalitarianism so much:

1 He'd tasted it himself and like a zealous ex-smoker, was determined to show the true colours of communism as practised by Stalin & Co.

2 Orwell was a believer in truth and he was well aware that the first victim in a totalitarian state is truth - everything is propaganda.
