"In what ways can the opening of a novel establish the nature and the development of the remainder of the work?"

Had to do this for an assignment and I can't really decide what the development of a novel is.

The beginning of a novel is soooo important; it possesses the power to set the entire tone of the book. It also provides that valuable "first impression" of characters and settings. What's said in the beginning of a novel can affect how you read the rest of a book.

The opening whether of a novel or a short story introduces the setting, characters, and conflict. Novels do that in many different ways. Look at the first chapter of any novel and you will see one way.
