is it possable that Orwell was off in his prediction by only a few decades? Are we on our way to super servalence as in the book? Correct me if im rong, but is it possible the patriot act is a sign of things to come?

Unfortunately, that is well and truly current politics, which is a subject outside of the limits here.

Read this post (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2982), which will explain it.

Happy to discuss by PM if you like.

No. There was no real threat to civilians of Eurasia, and there is some to USA civilians, especially after 9/11. High level of democracy and consciousness in society doesn't and would never allow to government to behave and act like Brotherhood.

Any comparison from the world of 1984 to any free society today frankly is childish.

of course in a literal sense there are few similarities, but i think there are underlying themes and concepts which are very relevant to Western society and liberal democracies. of particular relevance is the control mechanisms used and more importantly, how they were used.i dont think Orwell was trying to predict the future but to present a kind of 'worst case scenario' that we should try to avoid. i am not American, so i can't really comment on the Patriot act or anything like that but i think we as a society should always be cognizant those themes in our public discourse.

I think there's a great possibility that maybe one day our world could turn out like George Orwell predicted. there are many hints that can lead us to believe that this is already going on today in our society. i don't know if we will be under constant servalence but Orwell stresses many topics that are already alive in todays society. Such as, the women breaking out into a brawl over pots and pans. Why can't they worry about things that really matter in life? like today, not too many people are worried about voting and who will represent our communities to make our lives better, but they are all standing in the lines for the new XBOX360 that just came out. is it just me or is there something wrong with this picture?

1984 applies to 2007 as much as it did to the year it was published.

It's simply a grim warning of the ruthlessness of totalitarianism, as well as a statement of the next level of totalitarianism.
