Well, do you remember when birthdays were dreams?
And everything was just as it seemed?
When it was one happy day of an endless year?
And all that mattered was right now, right here?
When the laughter and smiles didn't mask any doubts?
And the cake and candles were what it was all about?
When there weren't fears of an uncertain future lurking?
And you didn't know the meaning of scared and weary?
When not knowing didn't bring tears to your eyes
And you didn't realise you're a year closer to your own demise?

Reality is manifest in your poem, and you so dispassionately and of course mercilessly awaken us to a fact most of us want efface from the page of our memory and live on and on.

Yet I like the poem for it is so beautifully and paradoxically composed. You have indeed a great craftsmanship.

You've seen so much in your time
Yet you're not quite wise beyond your years
The end of a childhood of worries and happiness
But not the end of all the laughter and tears

This is the time to look forward, not back
Though you don't know quite what you're hoping for
You've got a lifetime ahead of you
To get everything you wish, deserve and more

Remember the sun's only just rising for you
Put the darkness to the back of your mind
Don't forget that we're all thinking of you
As you leave the past behind

This is a lovely poem with that mixture of sadness and happiness when a child leaves home for the first time. Thanks for sharing.
