"The Jade Peony"
by Wayson Choy....
winner of the Trillium book award.
"a lyrical tale of growing up in Vancouver's early Chinatown. Intelligently and sensitively told, with dialogue that crackles with wit and familiarity."
-Denise Chong, author of "The Concubine's Children"

I nominate Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy.
Here's a brief summary:
"Violated by one man, forsaken by another, Tess Durbyfield is the magnificent and spirited heroine of Hardy's immortal work. Of all the great English novelists, no one writes more eloquently of tragic destiny than Hardy. With the innocent and powerless victim, Tess, he creates profound sympathy for human frailty, while passionately indicting the injustices of Victorian society."
C'mon you know you just wanna read some Hardy. ;)

I'll be voting for 1984. It makes sense since there is an entire section on this forum dedicated to Orwell.

I haven't read any of the books that were nominated and of that group i only own George Orwell's "1984".
In a futuristic mode i've read Aldous Huxley?'s "A Brave New World" and a few years ago "The last day" by Glenn Kleier.
I would like to propose a brasilian author, Paulo Coelho and his book "The Alchimist". He is, in my opinion, a very spiritual author; i read three of his books and liked the three very much.

I like the idea of Brothers Karamazov; that would be fun to discuss. I assume that at some point there will be a poll for us to vote on? I haven't voted on here before.

with an avatar like that, he must be 12 (kidding).
I would like to nominate Gone with the Wind. The Alchemist is a terrific book also.
However Im guessing its preferable to be a book listed on the website, so out of them I would like to nominate Gullivers Travels and Huckleberry Finn, because I really like childresn literature.
