I'm a wee bit early but I had to make sure I was the one to start this or I would be shamed in my role as friend and confidant and I can't have that so... :p

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RIESA!!!!!!

gifts to come later...when it's actually your birthday. ;) :p

I didn't have time last night to search for presents, but here you are dear Riesa.

And finally a poem for you by a poet not well known I'm afraid but very good. Bill Mathews. He gave a reading at College when I was an undergrad and thought him good. Found a poem I think you would like:

Mingus At The Showplace
by William Matthews

I was miserable, of course, for I was seventeen
and so I swung into action and wrote a poem

and it was miserable, for that was how I thought
poetry worked: you digested experience shat

literature. It was 1960 at The Showplace, long since
defunct, on West 4th st., and I sat at the bar,

casting beer money from a reel of ones,
the kid in the city, big ears like a puppy.

And I knew Mingus was a genius. I knew two
other things, but as it happens they were wrong.

So I made him look at this poem.
"There's a lot of that going around," he said,

and Sweet Baby Jesus he was right. He glowered
at me but didn't look as if he thought

bad poems were dangerous, the way some poets do.
If they were baseball executives they'd plot

to destroy sandlots everywhere so that the game
could be saved from children. Of course later

that night he fired his pianist in mid-number
and flurried him from the stand.

"We've suffered a diminuendo in personnel,"
he explained, and the band played on.

Happy birthday Riesa. :) (Did I spell your name correct this time? ;) )

Happy B day sis...
hoe you've enjoyed your Margarita !
;)

Riesa

Hey! Thanks the rest of you. Yes Willow! A Margarita, even if Cyber, is always welcome.. and probably much better tasting than that bud-light I sent you..:p, talk soon.

Madhuri, that is such a cool Avy. thanks for the birthday wish, Pensive, that is my favorite kind of cake! How'd you know? :D Now all I need is a huge cartoon fork and I'm set! and best of all, no calories!

Shalot, thanks. And you posted on my actual birthday, so I don't consider that late. :D Late is when it's June and you find all of your christmas cards unmailed, unwritten, and actually even unbought. ;) (my version of late)

Virgil, thanks for the pictures (although that bottled dolphin is a little disturbing and odd) I love the cat, and the saying, "the principle thing is to keep ones soul aloft," how true and beautiful.

I can't tell what's the better present, the poem or the fact that you spelled my name correctly, ;) both appreciated. "I knew two other things, but as it happens they were wrong." ~ what a great line.

Niamh, thank you for the wish and the pix, too. That's a great viking, who doesn't look like he'd let himself be put on a stick easily, and now I'm in the mood for Mexican food!

Thanks again, everyone.
