Brumby

Old Brumby was a racehorse,
The king of the course.
He ran lap after lap
Beating even Phar Lap.

But of course to this happy tale,
There’s a sad and sorry end
For Brumby one day vanished ‘round the bend
And the last we ever saw of him was the tip of his tail.

He lives beyond the eastern pines,
He’s too quick, too wary to catch
So we let old Brumby have his freedom
In the hope he’d return to us some day.

He wakes his herd
From dawn til dusk
They’re never heard
And they vanish just after the sun.

You may hear their hoof beats pass
Thudding in the grass
In the trees you hear a whisper and a sway
As they vanish far away.

Brumby found himself a mate
Together they ate
Together they ruled the herd
The herd that never says a word.

We found Brumby and his mate
We found they sired and dammed
Good racers that won the National
Just as he had done years before.

It seemed like Brumby had been born again
Young and fit and healthy
To race and win again
He made us wealthy once again.

His offspring proved just as good as he
On and off the track
Several group one wins
The Triple Crown too.

But sadly old Brumby passed away
We buried him with his saddle
His hooves polished and picked
Atop his favourite hill.

*****

A random verse I wrote..It describes what I see each evening, from my own back yard - literally!

The skies turn pastel shades of pink, blue and purple
As the sun sinks low in the western sky.
As nightfall draws nigh,
The ‘roos and the birds hide in the long grass and tall trees
And the owls and the possums come out to play.

A Year Ago Today

It's a year ago today,
That I saw you last
You tell me you miss me,
You want to see me again,
Yet you're always busy,
There's always an excuse.

You're losing all your friends,
Just to be with her.
A year ago today,
I'd have given anything to be you
Just for a day
Now, I'm not so sure.

You were my idol,
My love,
My everything,
A year ago today.

I guess this is just to tell you
That I still love you,
Though our friendship is surely over.

Brumby On the Hill

The sun is setting
And a warm summer breeze
Blows through the trees.
The brumby is silhouetted on the hillock
Watching the sun go down.
Then bolts for the plains
Escaping the threat of humans
Rejoining his herd
As they graze in the twighlight.
A coyote howls at the moon somewhere in the distance.

The herd is surrounded by a pack of prairie wolves
And the weakest are picked off, one by one,
As the stronger gallop for the safety of the mountains.
Tonight, the herd is frightened and weak,
Too afraid and restless to sleep.

Singing Joyously

As nightfall draws nigh,
Their nerves soar to new heights
Mixing and mingling with fear, dread and excitement.

Their names are called,
And nervously they step into the spotlight.
They pick up the microphones, and,
As the pianist begins to play,
Sing joyously, hoping for the best.

As they finish their song,
The crowd claps and cheers,
Applauding their performance.

Backstage, they sit in a huddled group,
Listening to the other Finalists,
Comparing their performance to their own,
Nervously awaiting the adjudicator's judgement.

You can find my work (mainly short stories and poems) by Googleing my name - almost the first 15 pages are all references to me! (Which is actually pretty scary....)

These poem are great, i feel the first is definately the best. These are really good, a lot of time looks to have been spent on these.

Thanks, RPMI!

I do spend a fair amount of time on each poem, and it's always nice to have someone look at it and say "That's really good! Well done!"
