To Wish and to Pray
by Mazhar Butt

To wish and to pray
Are two different things
One is godly the other human
You wish to be safe from harm
But still harm would come to you
Ever thought why this happens?
Wish and prayer are two different things
Like water and fire, Cold and heat
When you wish for something
Your wishing is a cry of your mind
Shrieking with doubt and hope
And shaky determination
Seeking benefit and pleasure for self
But when you pray you pray from your heart
Nay, from the innermost of your heart
For a fair cause and purpose
Shutting the windows of your mind
The flame of devotion in your heart brightens
And cleanses heart from doubts
Your ego submits to someone's Supreme
Whatever name you may give Him
The zealous Fire in your heart wipes out
All the aqueous and other pollution from your heart
Fills it with warmth and energy of faith
A faith, a belief, a promise, an allegiance
To one stronger and powerful than you and all
Angels smile
And a voice from the Heavenly Throne of God
Silently beckons the Prayer and says:
Your prayer is granted.

This is a good poem. It really gives a clear line between what wish and prayer are.
In point of fact both spring from the same source. I do not think wish is bad and prayer is good. At a superficial level it is different. At a superficial level they are different things but indeed at a deeper and deeper level they are one and the same, of course indifferently one and the same. Every prayer is a quiver that wells up from the heart and so is every wish. Your prayer is also your wish for without wishing for prayer we can not wish. They are so entwined that we can not say one from the other. They are indistinguishably the same entity.

Of course both can be distorted and both can be bettered.
