Autograph

I have had to stand in line so long, and now,
just when I thought I was close to the front,
you made me go to the end.
I have always been one to obey the rules,
Can you not let this one bend?

It is right, I suppose, to discipline me,
to stand me against the wall; ready, aim,
and to think of what I've done.
I'll go to my room or sit in the corner,
But this time out is really no fun.

Ah, the line is slowly moving again, oh,
will I get the chance to ask for romance
with you behind that rampart?
Will you be there when I reach the front
To sign your name upon my heart?

I'm standing right in front of you now, and I
place it gently before you, but she comes,
Sorry, he surely needs a break.
I pick it up and close it slowly
to wait within its ache.

You write so great Amp :thumbs_up ! And was your anticipation for autograph came worthy ? I'm sure you hadn't missed that chance. Amp, if you wouldn't mind, would you like to whisper the name of the one who you were desperately looking forward to have autograph ?

It's beautiful, Amp. But for some reason I don't think it's really about getting someone's autograph. I get a different feeling from it. I think it's lovely.

I like this piece. You might want to look up a short memoir by Ray Bradbury about the subject. Ray's
piece is called "Roller Skating in Hollywood."

Also, I seem to remember a novel "The Autograph Hound"
by John Lahr (son of the legendary Bert, whose most memorable role was that of the Cowardly Lion in the movie
version of The Wizard of Oz.)

You are very correct Granny.

Oh! my perspective while reading was straight forward. But I guess that's the beauty of poetry that every readers perceive the same things differently.

Ampoule, I'll say it again, you make me so sad. Reading your poems is like watching a late night weepy movie, you know it's going to make you cry but it's so beautiful you can't tear yourself away. This poem is lovely, as you poems always are, but painful. These lines killed me :

I pick it up and close it slowly
to wait within its ache.

This is an autograph line that I very much identify with, but you have the words to make it come real. Your poem makes me reach deep inside to touch that pain. Thanks, Amp.
