The Snake !
by Mazhar Butt

Halt! don't kill the innocent snake,
He's certainly not your enemy!
You poked and pushed him him out
And made him fall down the tree!

Look at his smooth glistening skin
Look at his great, charming eyes
Look how he wriggles, moves away from you
Look how like a lassie sweet he shies!

This gorgeous narrow creature of god
With rainbow colors, head crown'd with bands
Imprinted with brilliant diamonds and rubies
As if a bride's bed laden with pearly strands!

Don't kill the gorgeous snake, my friend
He's not a man to be man's enemy
He has his right to live on earth
Like the right God has given me and thee!

Let him live in peace with his fellows
He'll not approach you if you won't
Spare him live alone in his habitat
Let him drink his due from nature's font

He is lethal, poisonous, dangerous, yes
He is quick, smart, agile and fearful
But only when hunger shrinks his guts
Or when his life fears a fatal pull

Don't kill my daring snake,my friend
He's no danger to you if you care
Keep away from him, his bite ,his chores
Lest he enchantingly grips you with his snare!

Twirled and wound around the sandalwood tree
An army of deadly serpents you'll always find
Yet these venomous things pose no harm to the tree
Sandal smells as sweet and redolent as its kind

Don't kill the classic serpents any more
They are but one of god's creation
God made them like all other things
Not to be killed but for better reason.

Bless you, Mazhar, protector of the snakes. Wonderful sentiments here. You would enjoy D.H. Lawrence's Snake poem.

How about writing one about spiders, equally to be revered.

Thanks, a fine poem.

My feelings exactly. Many think me weird, but so? Snakes are beautiful and do a good job of keeping the rat and mice population from destroying crops. Don't mess with the posionous ones unless you have a death wish! Many beautiful snakes make good pets, and snakes do not crossbreed, despite what you may have heard. I have seen non-posionous snakes use all sorts of tricks to imitate a poisonous one (rattling a tail on dry leaves is a good one, by a rat snake!) They are dry skinned, not slimey, and rather fun to hold.

I'm still working hard on breaking the aracnaphobia, but I no longer kill spiders anyway.

Hi Pendragon

You and I are lucky to be weird, arn't we? People who don't believe in the weird
simply try to refute the myteries of nature and life. (I think! no offense meant to anyone, pls )

I am glad you like my poem and thank you for your beautiful observations on that. Perhaps, you know that the King Cobra, according to Indian belief, can change its form at the age of 100+ ? Also, In India, the Hindus annually celebrate festival of the Snakes called Panchami.

Thanks again.

regards

Hi Firefangled

I am grateful for your kind sentiments and thank you for the same. The poem could also be taken allegorically with regard to some typical breeds of people.

I love spiders. They are tiny soldiers of God on earth.I would surely like to write a poem about them at the first opportunity.
