Autumnal Travels

Cool morning dew glistens on freshly cut hay
waiting for it to be baled and put away.
The air has THAT certain smell; clean, refreshing,
moist and almost titillating.

The sun rises to cast shadows causing strange dances
as a slight wind blows through oaks and maples.
A walk through the wood is like walking into a
rainbow.

Leaves burst through a canopy of red,
orange, yellow and green. They float slowly
to earth to lay and rot into mulch, feeding and
blanketing the soil.

Deadwood crunch’s under foot and critters stop to listen.
Squirrels, birds, rabbits and others go about their task
of storing their winter time harvest and preparing
their homes for the cold.

Crossing a field of ripe pumpkins, the stream can be
heard. Its cold water rushing over clean rock and
gravel where brown trout begin their ritual romance
before ice forces them to deep pools.

The cabin is not far now, a definite scent of wood smoke
wafts about. Thinking, autumn is a glorious period where
after a spring and summer of growth and renewal, it’s a
period of rest, reflection and preparation for the next
cycle of life.

Lovely, so lovely. You have made me wonder what my cabin of preparation is.

amp, you opened up a new thought for me with that statement.

I think I want to change this to:

"The cabin is not far now, a definite scent of wood smoke.
wafts about. Thinking, this autumn of mine is a glorious period where
after a spring and summer of growth and renewal, it’s a
period of rest, reflection and preparation for the next
cycle of life."

Life is like the seasons isn't it...

You are to poetry what Pat McManus is to a humorous story on the outdoors. Something that makes one feel they have experienced the poem/story when the reading comes to an end.

Maybe it should have struck me before, but I see now how many of your poems, and especially this one, are somewhere between meditations and prayers. This one is especially serene and contempative. And lovely!
