I ate Sushi last night. Whenever I eat Sushi I always make a big production out of the idea that I may have gotten a little piece of puffer fish and my breathing is becoming restricted and perhaps I may be on my last leg. Now there's no way I got a piece of puffer but between the puffer disease and the marijuana thread it got me to thinking.....

Why do humans do the things we do...

Why jump out of an airplane?
Why eat a fish that if not prepared correctly will kill you within minutes?
Why climb mountains?
Why drive motorcycles?

Is it all about adrenaline?

Maybe we do these things for the risk, a close shave on death. Personally i'm too much of a chicken to do most things!:p

I think some folks are adrenaline junkies and some just do risky things in order to appreciate living. Maybe it's the challange of doing the dangerous thing and coming out safe? Or doing something most people won't ever try. I admire people who have the nerve to do some of the things I'm to afraid to do. Riding a motercycle without a helmet isn't just dangerous, it's stupid, IMHO.

People do crazy things because they like it. It's all about the guts, they like to risk their necks in things that are not really important to do, it's just about having fun. If that thing makes you happy, you crave more for that because that thing or hobby of yours makes you happy; even if it is extremely dangerous. You do what you wanna do.

Is puffer fish really THAT good?

I've read that it is a delicacy in some countries and that it will kill 60% of humans who consume it. I would really want to know if I was one of the 40% or the 60% before I ate it.

Haha, I had Sushi for the first time last night at my friend's house. It was amazing. It was eel, tofu, rice, and veggies rolled up in...something, and then cut into little pieces. Totally awesome. I never knew it was so dangerous, though! But my friend cooked for like an hour, and I think he was carefully preparing it the way the book said to.

The airplane could be training for a career in the military :D Or maybe you are a care package. :) My dad used to jump out of airplanes. Friends got him into it, and he does it for the adrenaline, which is pleasurable and exciting I guess. He's also hang-glided, which you can do from the ground, being pulled by a car, or jumping off cliffs. He has told me a few stories of people dying and almost dying about it. Like if someone runs off the cliff without strapping themselves in!!!!!! They might survive, but it's a long way to hang onto the bars!

I would love to do those things. Besides just the adrenaline, there's also the unique experience of flying. I'd probably prefer hang-gliding to parachuting, but maybe parachuting is a good warm-up to it. I understand it's serene. Anyone here a jumper?

Is it all about adrenaline?

Not always.

It is about being close mortality. It is when we are close to mortality that we realise how wonderful life is :D Our consciouness itself becomes something of a Fantastic Miracle :D

Not all sushi, just a certain fish (from:http://www.emedicinehealth.com/wilderness_pufferfish_poisoning/article_em.htm)

Pufferfish Poisoning Overview
The poison found in pufferfish, blowfish, balloon fish, toads, sunfish, porcupine fish, toadfish, globefish, and swellfish is a tetrodotoxin. This is one of the most toxic poisons found in nature. Most people who eat pufferfish do so intentionally; pufferfish are considered an Asian delicacy, served in some types of sushi and sashimi. Unless the chef is specially trained to cut the meat in a particular fashion, the dish may contain a large amount of the toxin. Pufferfish poisoning is similar to paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Pufferfish Poisoning Symptoms

Symptoms generally occur 10-45 minutes after eating the pufferfish poison and begin with numbness and tingling around the mouth, salivation, nausea, and vomiting.

Symptoms may progress to paralysis, loss of consciousness, and respiratory failure and can lead to death.

Anyone here a jumper?

I've jumped a few times and it is very exciting and peacefully, but now that I haven't done it in years I ask myself - What the heck was I thinking??

Why jump out of an airplane?

The fear and the rush of falling it's electrifying, I'm still working myself up to do it.

Why eat a fish that if not prepared correctly will kill you within minutes?

Because it's really tasty :p (Specially when it's a fish you're not supposed to be eating according to you vegetarianism and will make you guilty for ages)

Why climb mountains?

Pushing yourself to the limits and accomplishing something is amazing, it's better than running.

Why drive motorcycles?

Speed rush. The faster the better. Sport cars are also good for this but motorcycles rock!

Is it all about adrenaline?

Sometimes but more about pushing yourselves, discovering new things and yes, the rush of it.

<3 Adrenaline highs!

Ever heard of natural selection;) I think it is a way of weeding out the less cautious. I'm not saying these things are bad. Heck, I like to strap an air tank to my back and dive to 100 feet, but they do have a way of clearing the gene pool of people who are not careful and don't follow proper protocol:D

To impress women.

I assure you, I don't want to impress any women. :p And personally, I wouldn't be impressed a bit if someone did such a thing just because he thought I'd like that.

@Topic: I'll go with Niamh mostly. Though I know, I'm planning to climb a mountain - as soon as I know how to and where to and such ;) - because I'm very much a coward myself and would like to overcome that (among other reasons).

Interesting topic.

Cave exploration has been a hobby on mine for over 40 years. So I have some back ground in dangerous sports. Why, well why not? Underground earth is beautiful and inviting. Being the first human to see virgin cave is a wonderful experience making the crawling and climbing worth while. Lots of other reason also, mapping comes to mind, photography also.

Hate to admit it..but I'm one of those junkies...
Hot-air ballooning, parasailing, first seat in a roller coaster, whitewater...
the list could go on...
but as I've gotten older, I've slowed down on some of these things...:D
