Science has discovered a way to end a women's period using a pill.
Has science gone mad?
If you are a women - would you take it?
It will mean end of PMT.
Would that be a good thing?
Perhaps more harmonious male female relationships? :D

If it isn't medically necessary, why would I take it?
Honestly, I think science is getting a little carried away now with trying to change Mother Nature's plans.

Still wouldn't want to take it, though. After all, there is always the chance that I will want to have kids someday. This, I am assuming, would be affecting a person in that sense, too, wouldn't it?

No, it doesn't. Over here doctors have been using injections of that kind for a while, and quite a lot of young women take them. If they made them infertile, these injections would be forbidden. You get an injection every three months, and there will be no period. Stop the injections and after some time you can conceive again. No harm done. I hear that women are enthusiastic. Suddenly they feel free, in a way.

I would totally do it. Next time I go to the doctor and I am going to ask for it. I am a good candidate for it. Kids aren't gonna happen for me. There's a remote possibilty but if things continue on their present course, then I won't be having kids. And I don't want to.
I have a hard time with it. It keeps me up all night. The pain starts in the center and radiates down to my toes. I've got some meds but they don't do a lot for me. And it's not like I can call in to work either. I just have to go and try to concentrate through it and be nice and it sucks!!

Lote is right. Biologists/doctors say that women were not meant to bleed that often. At the beginning of homo sapiens' evolution women were pregnant much more often and then died an early death (as far as I know the avarage age was about thirty). Bleeding every month is not healthy, but of course, women cope, though many of them suffer a lot.
And I can't understand the argument of 'messing with mother nature'. We do it all the time. We take pain killers, heart medication, have our teeth replaced, go by car or plane although mother nature meant us to walk - I could find hundreds of examples.
Concerning infertility - I mentioned above that the injection (or pill) does not make a woman infertile. You just have to stop taking it.

I'm not sure if that is true Lote. Some have speculated that women have a reduced incident of heart disease until after menopause bcause of a monthly period. I saw on TV a doctor who speculated that a monthly blood donation might accomplish the same for men. Not sure of the logic. Perhaps less blood eases the stress on the heart. I have not seen any real study on this, but women do have decreased heart disease until after menopause.

I think the one thing I can't stand about being a women is my period. It grosses me out and its just annoying. But I will not take medication...even though at times I wish I could. The moodiness, cramps and ewwiness...it sucks. My brother used to say that he was lucky because he didn't have to deal with it...oh, but he does. :D
Uhhh...my friend hardly ever bleeds. Its crazy...she's so lucky. But it worries her at the same time.
Its just an uncomfortable thing all around. My friend passes out everytime us females talk about it in front of him. Its hilarious.:)

I would go insane . . . seriously. if you are sexually active and don't want to be pregnant, how else will you know every month that you haven't accidentally become pregnant? I need that monthly reminder, otherwise I will start to worry.
granted being on the Pill makes your chances of being pregnant extremely slim, but there still is that minuscule chance, esp. if you missed some pills or whatever. and I just worry about stuff like that, so I need the extra assurance
not to mention that it's kinda freaky in general. yeah, yeah, back in the day women had more kids and therefore had fewer periods over their entire lifetime, but I still think it's freaky.
I've been on the Pill (but not the one that stops your period!) for four years. And due to various personal circumstances, I've just gone off of it. I'm kinda glad not to be on it, because why put more extra things in your body than you need, right? (I take one necessary medication, I rarely take painkillers, and I just don't like taking pills in general. so the less, the better, as far as I'm concerned)

How long is it since people started taking these medications? Science needs some time (30 years at least) before they can really say what kind of after-effects there are.
@Niamh: Some people feel their period more than other (like Sleepy says, having bad cramps and such). I wouldn't judge them for that, overally.

I'm aware of that, especially seeing as i myself suffer from a bad heavy period that can last up to eight or nine days. The cramps i get are excruciating but i've noticed that since i went one the pill my cramps arent as bad. I go into work like this. I also go in when my IBS is really bad. These are apart of my life and i've have to live with tem so there is no point using them as an excuse everyday/month for the rest of my life.

I have no need to take the pill at my age but if it had been "out there" when I was younger, I would have taken it at certain times. There are women who have a terrible time with their periods every month. They miss work, they are really ill from the pain. They need this pill. If I were going to the Space Station, I would want this pill. Can't think of anything worse than being in space for a year or so and having to deal with my period. I would think that every woman would have a time in their lives they would want to not have to deal with it. The effects only last as long as you're taking the pill so there is no long term effects. I'm pretty sure that if men had to deal with what we women have to deal with, this would have become available many, many years ago. And, it is NOT unhealthy for most women to have periods. There are a few who have excessive bleeding, but Lote-Tree, you do not know what you're talking about. Can you give us the article or research you got your information from? I'd be interested in reading it.

Yes, the pill has been around a long time, it's called the contraceptive pill.
If you take the type of pill which has a week's break then just don't take the break. It's perfectly healthy to do so, and as I understand it when the pill was first launched you just took it all the time, but women didn't like it so they introduced the 7 day break which induces a 'false' period, and then women, in general, were much happier (or if not they just don't use the break period). On the 'mini-pill which you take all the time, this too induces a 'false' period, again because women didn't feel that it was normal or healthy not to have a period.
So, I guess we have a 'can't live with them, can't live without them' type relationship with the period, but this isn't one of your options Lote ;)
It's also incredibly old news.
Male/female relations would be more harmonious if men weren't so annoying. Perhaps you could post that as a question, Lote? ;)

Its more of a controlled period than a false one. But using the pill for too many years can be dangerous and may cause blood clotting and other stuff lik DVT. I think i've only another five years of taking it.
The Implanton on the other hand gives a definite false sense of a period. But its not for everyone. Trust me i had it and had to get it removed after six months.

It's also incredibly old news.
I guess to some it might seem like old news. But at least in the United States, pharmaceutical companies have only very recently (within the past year, it seems) started heavily advertising a pill that is purposefully made so you don't get your period, or so you get it only 4 times a year.
Sure it has already been possible to do this by just skipping your off-week, just like using heavy doses of birth control pills instead of a morning after pill has already been possible. I think it's still worth talking about - for those people who might be more inclined to follow the instructions on the pill pack, it does offer a different option.

Although it is believed that the appendix was a vital organ way back in Paeleolithic times before man discovered fire and cooked meat. Ie back in the time when we ate meat raw. Its believed its function was to help digest the raw meat and help kill unwanted bacterias. Because we now eat meat cooked and we have evolved it has become a useless organ with no function that no longer functions. Hasnt needed to for thousand of years.

Lote do you even know what a period is about?
every month a woman starts to ovulate. An ovary goes into the womb waiting to be penetrated by a sperm. The womb is lined (with blood) waiting a conception. This blood is therefore to help create a new life. If Sperm doesnt arrive, and egg dies lining is released creating a period. So now that you know that, do you still think its a good idea for women not to have a period? If we didnt we wouldnt be able to procreate, therefore no new life and human race could potencially die out.

We only have our period every month because at the beginning it was an evolutionary advantage to be fertile almost all the time, every month of the year. Other mammals are fertile only at certain times of the year, thus having fewer periods. Constant fertility is no longer wanted today (otherwise there would not be so many contraceptives). So building up new blood in the uterus every single month is actually a waste of energy - and it does take a lot of energy to build it up and then get rid of it again as can be seen from the problems all women have - more or less - with their period.

Niamh, you are correct of course. Cancer, HIV, childhood illiness, so many other things would make more sense. But I think researchers will take whatever grant money they can get for any reason. If someone is willing to pay them to research something, they'll research it. Even if it makes no sense.

I am personally sick and tired of men making decisions, judgements about women's bodies. As to the specific question, why not leave it up to the female person herself? Once again we come to the word that makes people on both sides of the pole see "red." And the word is "choice."
You know what we we could use from medical research? We need some kind of pill that would prevent men from acting like total jackasses. (I don't mean YOU personally, Lote-Tree. If in fact you are a of the male persuasion.)

I think the researchers were Female scientist.

I think whether to take pill or not is upto the women is it not? It is that that gave them the freedom they needed? At last they were in control of their reproduction?

Aunty Science is Neutral. Don't blame science for humanities failings.

Perhaps I haven't read the entire thread carefully enough, but where may I ask has anyone of the male persuasion in here made any decision for women on thier bodies?

thinking more about this thread, I remembered that I had a teacher in high school who was very interested in all things alternative . . . and they claimed that on the proper diet, it was possible to stop one's period. And I don't think they meant the kind of diet where you don't eat at all, which is another way of stopping the period.
Interestingly, that particular teacher has since undergone a sex change from female to male. I dunno if that means he doesn't have periods anymore. ;)
