Underground
People wait, anxious, on the platform.
Inside the tunnel the many-bellied
beast rumbles and grumbles, stirring,
always hungry. A blast of warm,
fetid air disturbs the pressing heat,
it is close, so close now; the people
tremble, waiting, ready.
From the darkness it bursts, sudden,
voracious, stopping long enough
to belch bedraggled bodies
from its many mouths.
More victims walk willing from
the platform into its waiting jaws,
it chomps them down,
and in a moment it is gone,
the station is empty
until the next time.

I like the line "many bellied beast." Sounds like a Lindwurm. Or the Midgaurd Serpent! A short stout pylon, but a plyon, nevertheless!

this is nice, fifth.but at first I thought the poem was related to the 'man is mortal' thing, but the word 'willing' got me dubious about that.is it just about a train and a station then?

Thanks all, Cdn - I too am occasionally one of those willing victims, but rarely, thankfully.
Gothic - thanks for your comments. This is my take on the dreaded London Underground (the Tube). I am in constant amazement at how people can do it everyday, it's so dingy, and dark, and sticky, and horrible. I find it pretty soul destroying, even every now and again, but I do it all the same ;)

i like the way poets percieve even a normal daily thing as a different something, an underground tube- a beast...etc
nicely put, fifth.
