I wish I was in BC to celebrate it, but alas I am stuck here wearing a maple leaf sticker on my cheek and telling anyone in the states who will listen for two seconds that it is Canada Day.

Yeah, happy Canada day people!
I am late because I worked and then went to the fireworks in Halifax, my capital city. Let me express how damn cold it was! Global warming seems like a hoax. The fireworks really not all that bad, and they were over the water so it was nice. We had some of the best viewing on the harbour, though, so it was great. :) Plus, my boyfriend kept me warm during it, so I could pay attention.

ahhh...canada day. ahhh....canada.
what an awesome event. we went to princess island park yesterday to celebrate with the rest of calgary, and wow...tons of events. there were bands every few feet, some so close together that they interfered with one another. the smell of frying onions permeated the whole atmosphere, but the food choices were vast. there were martial arts competitions in the park, comedians, fireworks, face painting, tatoos, little kiosks selling handmade jewellery. so many people wearing red and white, faces painted with canadian flags and maple leaves (i, myself got a tatoo on my chest that said "canadian girls kick ***"; i'll attach a picture of it when they are all uploaded).
oh and lets not forget the belly dancers....one of them snitched my bf and dragged him up on the dance floor to dance with her (she just walked right up and put her scarf around his neck...why did this never occur to me as a valid way of getting a man?). anyhow, it became apparent that i love him not for his skill as a belly dancer, but we all had a great time laughing!
then off to some friends for a bbq and competitive games of cranium. then the fireworks after dark, put on by the city, followed by less impressive fireworks attempted by the men of the house....(no one got hurt, thank goodness)
happy birthday canada

Hoy Canadians!
Why is it that there are so many Canadian musical ensembles that I like? It must be something in the water up there. (Neal Young – yeah, go-man-go!) Anyhow, I was just perusing the Atlanta Journal Constitution (the local puppy trainer ‘round here) and noticed that an old favorite of mine is coming to town. “The Cowboy Junkies” They’re playing down at the Atlanta Botanical gardens Wednesday night. Dang-it, I’m working. One of the gutsiest moves I’ve ever seen was on their first album (trinity sessions). They kicked off the first track acapella.

Got this one from Harpers also, and I can’t think of a better place to put it, so I’ll put it here:
“It was reported that one of the first lesbian couples to get married in Canada filed for divorce within five days, though Canadian law does not yet recognize same-sex divorce.” [Globe and Mail]

Oh, weird. How do you know you don't like a person after 5 days? They were probably getting too much crap and couldn't handle it...

Im kinda late, since Canada day seams to have been 1 July, but anyway: Happy Bithday Canada, I hope I will see u yet some day!
Ya know, I lived in Canada for a year when i was 6. I sopke perfect English with Toronto accent, but in lack of use I forgot it, so now I speak just school English, which I have hardly ever really sopken actually (only prensentations in English class at school....) Now I dream of going back to Canada to see the old places I remeber: Niagare Falls, the Toronto neighbourhood were we lived...well. Oh, and what else I remember is the national hymn. It went something like Oh Canada, oh Canada... Well I ndont remember more than that, but my mum keeps singing it sometimes...

Faith, so glad to know that you had good experiences during your time as a Canadian. here are the words to our National Anthem:
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee

Guess where I hear it sung for the very first time VBM.
At the rodeo!
I seem to have become a trifle overexcited as I used punctuation normally avoided.

That really cracks me up! Yes we live in ingloos to and most of us have been raised on yak milk :D The difference between canada and the states is pretty simple. If you go to america you are assimulated into the cultural stew, but if you came to canada as a spring onion, the chances are you will remain a spring onion without anyone trying to change you into a tomato or cucumber. I love my country! and you love yours.

Canada is a cultural mosiac, America a melting pot. The main difference for these analogies is that in Canada a persons individuality is kept to add to the greater diversity of the finished picture, while in America a person is assimilated, or "melted" into an already existing conglomerate culture. Canada expresses the individaulity of each person individauly, America expresses a nations individuality, not a persons individuality.

hm. well put. it's very obvious is one hasn't assimilated here/isn't quite definable. although i once talked with a man from canada; he was native american and elderly. he said it was very hard growing up with racism directed at him because of his heritage.

Both countries have certianly had their share of discrimination, what with racism, sexism, and religious discrimination, but all countries seem to have those problems. I think somehting that sets Canada and America apart from other countries is their ability through the benefits of money and wealth and travel options, to see the world picture. But the difference between the two is that Canada Accepts the world as it is, with it's horrors and tries it's best to pererver as they see fit for themselves, while America wants to change the world. THere are benefits and problems with both perspectives. But I shouldn't generalize about other countries other than those two since I don't know much about them, I apologize for any stereotypes that are inncorrect.

i wasn't trying to say anything bad about canada; my two grandfather's from new brunswick. i've always marvelled at how very kind he is, and wondered if it's due to being from there. all i meant was that no country's unblemished. i give kudos to canada when all is said and done.

What could be bad about a country with Nanaimo bars, Tim Hortons, and the Saskatchewan Pirate song?

I just loves Canada!
I’ve always been treated with the greatest of cordiality when I visit. (even in Quebec – perhaps especially in Quebec)
Oh yes, and the fishing is great.
