Hello everyone. I hope you are all doing well. :)

I have just finished reading HoD for the third time. And I must say, I've never read anything like it before...

Anyways, for an assignment, each person was assigned a motif. My motif was colors (not white or black). Now we are to write an essay on how the motif works into the context as a whole, while also relating it to a larger idea/conflit.

Example of Thesis: "Conrad's repeated use of the word hollow(motif) through Heart of Darkness clearly illustrates his condescending attitude toward European imperialism (larger idea/conflict)."

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind in helping me with a thesis involving colors. I'm pretty much stumped on how colors tie into the novella as whole.

Some observations about colors (not white or black) in HoD:
*There are around 25+ references to colors
*The most common colors mentioned are: red, green, and blue.
*Many colors are mentioned when describing flames and the Russian's attire (list form).
*For some, when a color is mentioned, so also are the colors white or black.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you everyone. Take care =)

colours are a representation of maps and thsu colonialism, the patchwork of colors on the russians uniform is also a play on the harequin tag assigned to him, in that his patchwork clothes reflect the clothes of a jester.

It just occurred to me, do the range of coloured patches on 'the harlequin' have any relation to the colonial colours on the map? It's stated that he has traveled, so are the colours a subtle representation of the countries/ colonial regions that he has traveled through?
