We don’t know why
He does what he does
Just that he does it everywhere
Is it dancing or directing traffic
Or just his obsessive ritual
To cross the street
The Bird Man is seen by all
And watched over carefully
Harmless except to himself
Writing poetry on tea towels and
Paper bags, napkins, what ever is handy
Some silly, some moving, some cry for help
All created in minutes while you wait
We don’t know who he is or
What goes inside his head
Just that he is
Tall, thin and browned by the sun
Water bottles and grocery bags
Carried like they are precious
The Bird Man seen by all
Watched over carefully
Harmless except to himself

I liked this, I can see him out there talking on his hand like it's a phone and giving passers by the finger. I love the traffic dance. By the way, he is rough in a fight and every once in a while he will get into one. He has super human strength.

He always bends down and touches the street before he crosses. Maybe that's why he hasn't been hit by a car yet.

Good word picture, Granny. There is a Bird Man type person in almost every town.

Love this, Granny! And it's something of a departure for you, isn't it? Both in the subject matter and also in the freedom with which it's written.

The character seems to leap out of the computer and stand on my desk and say, "Hey! Look at me!" Best yet, I think, Granny Sandy! http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/sportlich/f015.gif

Thank you Prince and Pen. The Bird Man is a fixture in town. It's interesting to watch his ritual when he attempt to cross the street. He's very careful but it can be nerve racking to someone who doesn't know what he's doing.

He’s a crazy guy in town. But I often think that I acted just like I felt like acting all the time I would appear just as crazy. Sometimes I’m shocked at how crazy he is and sometimes I’m shocked at how crazy he’s not.

This is a wonderful poem Granny5, beautifully written. I love the repetition 'harmless except to himself'. You've made him real.
