I hope someone here can help me. I have been racking my brain (and computer) for a title of a book.
The book I read when I was young. So, bare with me on the details of the book. I have read a lot of SF books when I was young so I might have got some books mixed up. I will try to give as much info as possible.
What I remember is:
1.A man walks up to a cave. I don't rember if he was running to hide or just exploring. He sees bones or remains of other bodies (human or animal)
2. He gets bitten on the head by a spider like creature. (this could have been like a tick or a worm). The man manages to survive the bite and gets out of the cave.
3. the "spider" becomes a symbiote or parasite to the man.
4. the man becomes immortal or long living. He lives long enough to have to change his identity.
5. This part I might be confused with another story. But, I think that this man was a roman soldier during the time of christ and witness his crusifiction. But, dont add this to the search because again I might have this from another book.
6.He has a relationship with this "spider/symbiote". He was able to communicate with it.
7. This is a big one. At one time this man had his heart hurt. He was either stabbed or shot. The man nearly died. The "spider" repairs the heart and builds a 2nd heart in his hip to avoid any close calls to heart injuries.
8. I read this book in the mid 70's. I am pretty sure I didn't read it before 1980.
