Agreed about Vashti; I love the earlier stuff more... the latter don't impress me as much, but I am sure they will grow on me. I am definitely impressed with how well she sings and plays at age 70.

I remember Planxty/Christy Moore from way back the 1970s. Not only am I that old, but I grew up in Boston where a lot of the music we listened to was Irish.

Burt Jansch is (and always was) less well known by audiences than by other performers. He taught himself an acoustic guitar style based on American delta blues players like Furry Lewis and Big Bill Broonzy, that no one else in his generation could do quite as well. Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, and Led Zeppelin all talked about how they learned their style by trying to play like him. (That didn't stop Zeppelin from ripping off his Black Waterside and not giving him credit, though). To this day, he's not that well known, at least on this side of the Atlantic. I remember his obituary in the New York Times: "Influential guitarist dies." That just about says it all.

I don't know if I know any "unknown" Bert Jansch, but this is a early seventies video of Jansch as a hippy, with Jacqui McShee (whose sweet clear voice he tried to use to mask his own croaky Dylan-esque one). I don't think the song will have much appeal to this generation, but it's endearing (in a hilarious way) to those of us who dressed like that, thought like that, smoked the Dunhills, drank the wine, and got to know the lady. He obviously made better songs than this, but this one slays me, so you'll have to deal with it.

Needle of Death is a fairly well regarded early Jansch song (from around 1965), about heroin death. It's pretty famous, so you've probably already heard it. It's a beautiful song in its way, but it doesn't really show his finger style that well.

Speaking of early work, Jansch is supposed to have either done the arrangement for Annie Briggs' version of Blackwaterside or learned it from her (they were close at the time). Either way you can hear the later Pentangle song in Briggs' version:

If you don't know Briggs, by the way, she was like Vashti Bunyan in that she essentially walked away from a recording career in disgust; and like Jansch in that people who had successful careers (Bob Dylan, Donovan Leitch, Joan Baez, Sandy Denny, Jacqui McShee, and many others) were actively trying to imitate her. She recorded very little (and supposedly hated what she recorded), but she had played small clubs for ages and everyone knew her repertoire and vocal style.

This is a song that Briggs wrote when she was close with Jansch. I'm know the Pentangle version--its a good example of how indebted McShee's vocals were to Briggs.

Graham's introduction to She Moved Through the Fair is new to me, by the way, Frankly It sounds like Zeppelin ripped both of them off (or all three, if you count Briggs). I mean, everyone did She Moved Through the Fair--Sandy Denny most effectively (she had the perfect spooky voice for it), but even she was just following Briggs;

I'm trying to think if I know any more out of the way music Jansch. You seem to know his later work (after he had pretty much thrown his career away to alcoholism), which is exactly the part I don't know very well. But I did run I to a late-ish song recently that I liked. You probably know it already, but I'll include it on this literature site because it's about Journey to the West, the great Chinese classic about the monkey king, Sun Wukong Buddhist scripture to Tang China. It's got some great Jansch guitar picking on it even if he was a bit burnt out at the time.

You may also have seen this interview with Jansch, done shortly before his death, in which he seems like a sweet, vaguely sad old man. (Beware hipsters, passing by/As you are, once was I! :) ). He talks a little about Bill Broonzy and Bukka White. He also does the Jackson Frank song "The Blues Run the Game." Frank is another of these "unknown legends" His story gets pretty bizarre at times (you may know it already); but he certainly didn't have the genius of a Bert Jansch (or even a Vashti Bunyan).

If you're interested, you should also check out the two greatest delta blues players, Robert Johnson and Skip James. James' early recordings were mostly of poor technical quality, but luckily he had lost none of his talent when he was "discovered" as an old man by whites (with good microphones) in the 50s and 60s. Johnson you probably already know since his work was so influential. His recordings are somewhat clearer, but he was long dead by the time very many whites decided wanted to know him. Johnson is usually considered the greatest of the delta blues artists, but personally I prefer James' weird, spooky falsetto.

I mean, musicians knew about Bert Jansch and Annie Briggs, but no one had ever heard of Vashti Bunyan. It's a bit like what I try to say on the modern classics thread--history does her own thing, and the future is often not what you think or hope it will be. Anyways, sorry.

I much compare Jansch to Alan Watts in terms of their lives. I think you may be confusing deterioration of physical health with spiritual force and beauty of their art. The best work that Jansch ever produced was his oldest studio songs... they are simply wordlessly transcendentally beautiful. There is nothing I would rather hear many times, nor anything I would not rather play for someone, for instance, who had crazily produced a gun on me in some grocery store or convenience station.

And - oh, yeah, I was very saddened when I first learned... like, it's funny. I discovered Jansch like what, 2 years before he died? And it's much a shame. I knew he was going to die in a few years, but I only got a short time to get to know him. I don't mind though, everyone goes in their own time. And you can connect so well with a prolific artist like that.

But I realized a couple of things, in my sorting it out. One was, we wouldn't be contending, you wouldn't think it contentious of me to disagree with you, and I think that's an important distinction.

I could listen to this "From the Outside" forever... several of those songs are the best I've heard, such as Silver Raindrops, High Emotion, and Read All About It. And as far as I know, all the rest of the later studio productions of Jansch are also very good.

So, if you go about learning Bert Jansch from Youtube, you will probably go through them something like this: Fresh as a Sweet Sunday, Blackwaterside, Traveling Song, Light Flight, Pentangling, A Woman Like You.. I have listened to almost all of it, that I can find, and I have listened to most of it many, many times. I've also listened to a few, maybe 6 or 7 that I've downloaded elsewhere.. I also owned a greatest hits of Pentangle once. Usually I like to have a lot more of an artist, maybe 6-10 albums.. but not all of them I do.

It is just that her voice reminds me of an inferior version of Jacqui's, so I just can't appreciate it really. It's not that way with Mazzy Star. Ah, A Woman like You is a wonderful song! I'd forgotten all about it! I was a teenager back in the seventies, and for a while I had a girlfriend whose sister had a big collection of what we used to call "folk rock" in those days. We used to sneak into her sister's room after she'd gone to college, listen to her records, and--you know, kind of kiss. I remember there was Bert Jansch, with or without Pentangle; and Fairport Convention in various stages of dissolution: Richard and Linda Thompson, Richard Thompson alone, Fotheringay (Sandy Denny's virtual sound-alike band after she left Fairport), Sandy Denny alone; also Maddy Prior with Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior with June Tabor, and Maddy Prior by herself; and even some Annie Briggs and Jackson Frank songs on compilations. Later when I saw a copy of Diamond Day, I vaguely remembered the cover art from those days, but I'm really not too sure. I don't remember listening to anything by Vashti Bunyan or even knowing who she was.

Then the 1980s came and making out to Pentangle was as dead as love beads (it was an era of considerable cultural retrenchment--I left town). Near the end of the decade, though, I picked up a few of the old folk rock albums on CDs; they were hard to find and expensive, so I didn't buy too many. It's kind of incredible to me to find people like you today who have even heard of some of those performers.

It's funny you say that because Annie Briggs apparently hated the sound of her own voice when she heard it on tape. It's supposed to have been one of the reasons she turned her back on the whole business and moved to Scotland to drink and scowl. Traditional music owes her a lot, though. Before her time, people would go find old men in old villages who would sing them the old songs in a very stilted and stylized way; and they would record them in more or less the same way. What Annie Briggs did was to personalize the lyrics, so that it was no longer the voice of a local songster singing about a woman who had been seduced by a handsome but callous man (to use Blackwaterside as an example), but the voice of the woman herself.

We take that sort of thing for granted today, but it was really a development that Briggs brought to the music. Jacqui McShee had a gorgeous soprano voice, and she could just belt it out when she wanted to; but you can see from the few Briggs recordings that exist how much McShee's songs, which were arranged by Jansch, owe to the work he did with Briggs. That's not taking anything away from McShee. She had the voice of a seraph on steroids. Personally I like Annie Brigg's voice, too. There is a certain bitterness to it that comes from her times (and that is absent from the crystalline purity of McShee's voice). But again, there's no reason we need to agree about which we prefer.
