Hey guys,
I am studying novel writing as a part of my Extension Studies course at school in year 12. Basically means I get to follow a passion of mine and research all about it, culminating in me writing the first 3 chapters of my own novel, applying all the researh I have. Hopefully you could help me out though.
I am looking for you guys to tell me what you like to read in novels.
Interesting features, tricks, literary devices, as well as anything else that you generally look for in a novel, and what keeps you hooked on it. Try and think of you favourite books and authors and what they did for you to think of them as such.
I am predominantly looking for younger people to reply but I would be extremely greatful to anyone that does. If you could also take part in my poll, that would help greatly in tabulating my results.
Thanks HEAPS for all your help,
Tom

I like novels with in-depth discussions about complicated concepts. Character arch-types analogous to real life people and the way they act/think. Characters who make insightful statements about psychology. Complicated political or economic concepts. Sci-fi. Pretty much anything that makes me think while I'm reading and after. I'm 16.

Actually no enough time in my system right now. But when I get back I'll by God's grace respond to that.

What I really look for in a novel is imagination. If you write of what you see in society, just replicas of everyday or historical phenomena that can not be but a dull novel. Imaginative things are what excite readers with a little flavor of philosophy if you really can. But it demands of you a great amount of study from theology to quantum mechanics through social economics and the like.
In fact there is no such thing as a formula, and if we stick to a formula we will lose our inventive capacity to it.

I like creativity and I also like it when books send out powerful messages. When they cause people to think, yet really enjoy it. I love it when books make me laugh out loud and when they make me cry, which isn't often...but it just means its really powerful. But I like humor that isn't stupid, like "Your mom!" or stuff like that. Intelligent humor, if that makes sense. I love really descriptive passages so that its like you are actually there in the story. And I really, really like it when the author puts a bit of their culture into it...just to give it that extra oomph!

I'm sorry I didn't take the poll. I'm 16, but I don't often read stuff from that age bracket. Too full of teenage angst. I read a plethora of different age groups but stick mostly to not-as-well-known classics. What do I like in a book? Good fantasy is supremely hard to find. Like Mortis said, I love books that have a foreign flare to them. Not necessarily the author's own culture but some culture. I'm picky on romances -- I don't often find romance books i like because they're so SAPPY! Ew! :D
Hope that's what you're looking for.

I think what's appealing in a novel for me is the sequence of events, how you're putting the lives of the characters together. I'm someone who'd go for a novel that has tension. I like to see inner conflict, conflict between characters, hidden feelings and that sort of thing. one great example of the type of novels I like are Jane Austen novels.

I like books where I can tell the author has really thought about the plot, and then really managed to write it down. I look for imagination, structure and not too much recurrence. Another thing with reading a book, is that a lot of people seem to think the book gets better if they write complicated words that sounds smart, but I'd say: Skip that!
